Groceries_dcgWe’ve all done it – had a bit of a moan about not being able to find our favourite foods in Singapore. Well complain no more mamas! For your everyday essentials

Cold Storage

Your go-to supermarket for all your shopping needs; depending on which store you go to, some tend to have more variety than others. Our fave is their Great World City location – it’s huge and has a fantastic section of health conscious and allergy friendly products.

One of the largest grocery retailers in Singapore, it’s a good choice if you’re looking to stock up on your everyday staples at really good prices. With stores dotted around the island, the Killiney Road location is a Sassy Mama fave.

Fairprice Finest

The more international version of good ol’ Fairprice, you’ll find a good selection of international brands at competitive prices. We love their Bukit Timah Plaza location as it has a good balance of local and international brands – just be warned mama that it’s often packed on weekends and its location means it can be tricky getting a taxi home.

The ultimate Singapore hypermarket, you can get everything you’ll ever need (plus much more!) under one roof. With wallet friendly prices and a massive selection, this is your budget super store – you can even pick up reasonably priced electrical goods, stationary and outdoor goods here.

This department store’s new Japanese inspired supermarket stocks a massive range of groceries and is a convenient choice for Orchard or Tanglin mamas who need to do a weekly shop.

A haven for home-sick mamas (or anyone who’s looking for high-end Western groceries), these guys have a huge variety to choose from – they even stock a good range of American brands too, although prices can be a tad painful on the hip pocket.

Meidi-Ya Supermarket

This Japanese supermarket sells a great selection of Japanese condiments, tofu and shirataki noodles (for the carb-concious) as well as all your other daily household needs. Its location in Liang Court makes it easy to swing past after a morning spent playing with the kiddos at Royce Kids Gym or The City.

For super fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, heading to your local wet market is always a good idea – produce doesn’t come any fresher than this!

Tiong Bahru Market

According to many mamas-in-the know Tiong Bahru wet market has some of the freshest produce around (it even has a great selection of organic stalls) and is conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the MRT station. Check out our Sassy Mama review here!

If you’re looking for wholesale goods (especially fresh seafood!)

Whilst these gems might not be located in the centre of town, it’s still worth the hike to pick up some fabulous bargains!

Ben Foods

Located at 1 Fishery Port Road (we realise it’s a bit of a hike, mama!) these guys are one of the biggest food distribution companies in S’pore, and while they used to open their doors to the public on Saturday mornings (sadly their Saturday operation closed back in March), chefs-in-the-making can still pick up their wholesale food goods (you’ll find everything from frozen foods, to pantry staples and even some fruit and veg) on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 3 and 5pm.

1 Fishery Port Road, Jurong, Singapore 619729

Just across the road from Ben Foods at no. 25 Fishery Port Road, is FISK – the retail store of Scandinavian seafood importer, Snorre Food. You’ll find a wide variety of fresh, frozen and marinated seafood imported from the Norwegian Coast, and with convenient opening hours (they’re open from 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday) you can pop down here to stock up on an array of seafood delights.

Greenwood Fish Market

Located in the quiet neighbourhood enclave of Greenwood Ave, this fish market is unique because you can either buy your fish fresh to prepare at home, or have their chef cook it for you to eat in their bistro (located just a few doors away). Open every day (except Mondays) from 11am to 10pm, this neighbourhood favourite specialises in coldwater fish and seafood from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US.

Jurong Fishery Port

Although these fishmongers are open throughout the day, a super early visit (we’re talking about a visit between 2am and 4am, mamas!) to no. 35 Fishery Port Road is warranted if you want the freshest catch of the day. Be warned though, you can’t buy in small quantities (think bulk and stock up the freezer or share with your mama friends!), and you’ll need to wear suitable footwear (splish splosh!). Don’t forget your ID either so you can exchange it for an entry pass at the guard post. Open everyday except Mondays.

Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre

Not the most kid-friendly place in town, this wholesale centre is packed with a huge variety of fresh fruit and vegetables sold at fantastic prices! Well worth the morning trek, this is where the other market stall owners go to pick their offerings. Between the actual trucks and the warehouses there are several uncles and aunties selling smaller quantities of the fresh stuff at teeny tiny prices. We definitely recommend picking up some super fresh mangoes and pineapples when you’re here – divine!

Sakuraya Fish Mart

A firm favorite by Japanese food lovers, fans rave about the freshness of the produce here and often eat their freshly purchased fish in their no-frills dining area. With outlets at West Coast Plaza, Parkway Parade and the Anchorpoint, you can be sure to get your fill of fresh seafood prepared ‘Japanese-style’ without having to travel too far!
