Check out these kid-friendly places for rock climbing and bouldering in Singapore

Want to take the kids rock climbing or bouldering in Singapore? Rock climbing is such a fun physical activity that the whole family can do together and it’s a great way for kids to develop gross motor skills and build stamina. Need a few recommendations for bouldering (which is a form of climbing without ropes) or kids’ rock climbing? We round up a few cool spots with themed climbing walls, augmented reality areas and more! Loads of these rock climbing and bouldering gyms are also open for younger kiddos – some even host birthday parties. All you have to do is come in sportswear and bring covered sports shoes with socks. You can rent special climbing shoes if needed along with any other necessary equipment from the rock climbing or bouldering gyms directly. Do note that you’ll need to check minimum age/weight requirements and you have to factor in rental on top of rock climbing entry fees. Keep scrolling to find out all the best rock climbing and bouldering gyms in Singapore!

Difference between Bouldering and Rock Climbing

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing that doesn’t require a rope or harness. Bouldering walls are thus not very high since you only climb 3-5 metres. There will usually be a soft landing pad under a bouldering wall for you to land on if you fall. You’ll need to learn the correct bouldering techniques and how to return to the floor safely. Rock climbing (also called rope climbing) requires a rope and harness and you frequently climb more than 9 metres off the ground. With rock climbing, many centres use an auto belay – an automatic electro-mechanical or mechanical climbing belay system. It replaces the need for someone to hold your rope and tighten it as you climb as the auto-belay automatically retracts the climbing rope, taking up the slack as you climb. Kids can easily learn how to do this but for safety, you should check new climbers’ are locked in every time they climb. With bouldering no such equipment is needed. Our kids have found rock climbing more fun as many of the climbing walls are themed and they like the challenge of climbing high which you don’t get with bouldering. Also with bouldering to come down from your climb, you need to jump to the crash pad. With rock climbing kids get to rappel (abseil) back down safely with the auto-belay system which is pretty fun!
