Chinese New Year 2020 festivities have started! As ever, Singapore welcomes in the Year of the Rat with a host of fun kid-friendly CNY events around town! From the annual Chingay parade (the largest street performance and float parade in Asia!), to light displays, fireworks, Cantonese opera, lion dances and craft workshops, there’s heaps of holiday fun for the fam.

So dust off those cheongsams (with matchy-matchy CNY outfits for junior of course), book your reunion lo hei and get ready to yell Gong xi fa cai!

Chinatown Street Light Up
Chinatown is the place to head for Lunar New Year celebrations! The official light up and opening ceremony will be followed by six weeks of dazzling street lights and decorations at Chinatown. The light-up will feature handmade sculptured lanterns of all the animals in the Chinese Zodiac, with the quick-witted and resourceful Rat leading the pack, of course! Other highlights include a Heritage & Food Trail, the chance to catch Traditional Cantonese Opera, and a Festive Street Bazaar. Worth braving the crowds for, especially if you’ve never seen it before.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party

Usher in the Year of the Rat with live performances and a countdown celebration with MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown. Lively performances await, from a medley of festive songs and skits to interactive games as the countdown party culminates with firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks. We are excited about this one!

Fireworks at River Hongbao Carnival

Like fireworks? The River Hongbao lights the skies with award-winning fireworks displays from artists from across the globe! Larger-than-life lantern displays depicting familiar Chinese mythological figures will enchant little ones, while the exhibit “A Harbour and Home: The Singapore River Through Time” takes you through a historical ride into our past. Thrill seekers should check out the carnival with 20 rides and games, while foodies can satiate their taste buds with more than 40 sumptuous varieties of local and regional delicacies on offer.

Chingay Parade & Carnival

Get excited for the Chingay parade, the annual largest street performance and float parade in Asia! The Chingay carnival takes place over three days, at the open space behind the Singapore Flyer. Expect mouth-watering food, participate in various hands-on activities like silkscreen printing and making Chingay props, and be entertained by young performing talents.

With the city skyline as a backdrop at the Cultural Centre’s Roof Garden, Huat Huat Land promises plenty of Instagram-worthy moments for the family with larger-than-life pineapple installations that span up to 3-metres in height, illuminated in gold as night falls. Usher in the Lunar New Year with thrilling lion dance performances by an award-winning local lion dance troupe! Try not to hold your breath as the lion leaps from pole to pole and performs difficult stunts. Plus, watch The Story of Nian unfold through music, puppetry, and drama, and don’t miss out the spark-tacular Golden Pyro Dragon Dance making its first appearance in Singapore, meet-and-greet sessions with the God of Fortune, and a festive bazaar!

Huayi Chinese Festival of Arts at The Esplanade

Huayi Festival, Singapore’s annual Chinese Festival of the Arts, is back, complete with theatre, music, and lion dance performances plus kid-friendly shows and workshops (like learning Chinese dance for kids), too. The festival kicks off on 15 February with a lively performance by ZingO, followed by Yiwei Athletic Association’s acrobatic lion dancers. There’s also a modern Chinese adaptation of Hamlet by acclaimed director Li Liuyi, an opera in concert and something for the little ones – Child’s Play, The Story of the Banyan Tree. This show aimed at ages 6 to 11 is adapted from a classic local folklore, and is packed with hands-on activities and creative storytelling to teach children the importance of teamwork.

Visit the Istana
Take a peek into the Presidential grounds! Entry to the Istana grounds is free for Singapore Citizens and PRs, while entrance into the Istana Main Building costs just $2 for others. There is often a variety of performances on the grounds during the Open House, and visitors are encouraged to embark on guided tours.

Get the Lunar New Year off to a rousing start with an entertaining line-up of joyous and auspicious activities at Universal Studios Singapore. Follow The Auspicious Dragon Trail as it makes its way around the park accompanied by up-tempo drum beats. Favourite characters from each themed zone will be dressed in festive outfits, ushering in the Year of the Rat in a most fun and delightful way that will endear all in the family. POSB new notes pop-up ATMs return this Chinese New Year & Red Packets Recycling

New and good-as-new notes will be available from 9 January to 24 January 2020 at 40 POSB pop-up ATMs across 20 community clubs islandwide. You’ll also be able to reserve time slots for new notes exchange via DBS’ online reservation system.

Starting 28 January 2020, recycling bins for used red packets will be available at all DBS/POSB branches across Singapore. The recycling bins will be available all year so customers can also recycle packets from other festive occasions, such as Hari Raya and Deepavali.
