Pack the picnic rug, delicious treats, some suncream and head into the great outdoors with the kiddos!

With Singapore literally covered with parklands and nature reserves, there’s no shortage of lush green lawns to unfurl your blanket and enjoy your lunch outside with the fam. Time to pack those sandwiches mama and get picnicking!

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

Calling all dog-lovers! This 62-hectare park is the place to go if you want to picnic with your pooch (and the kids too!). The revamped park has a huge dog area so is super welcoming to the beloved family pet, as well as endless stretches of flat paths perfect for active kiddos to skate, ride or scoot. If that’s not enough to convince you, there are plenty of public toilets, a community garden, a Garden Spa (hello mama!), 3 adventure playgrounds and a small water play area, as well as more lawns than you could poke a stick at!

Where: Along Bishan Road and Ang Mo Kio Ave 1, Singapore

Chinese Garden

Chinese Gardens

For green grass as far as the eye can see, make a date to visit the Chinese Gardens for a leisurely picnic and a mope around on the lush lawns. Popular with kite-flyers, pack your cucumber sandwiches and your appetite and let the kids free roam around the grounds. Littlies will love feeding the fish in the main lake (don’t forget the stale bread!) as well as the endless space for ball games and running wild!

Where: 1 Chinese Garden Road, Singapore 619795

Clementi Woods Park

When it’s not hosting the annual Mooncake Festival event, Clementi’s 12-hectare green space is a pretty good picnic spot. Enjoy the huge lawned areas in the shady park (there’s heaps of trees here!) or climb the tower at one end of the park to take in the view of the surrounding areas. Little ones can stay occupied between bites at the small playground.

Where: Clementi Road next to Kent Vale, along West Coast Road next to Ginza Plaza, Singapore

East Coast Park

With over 15km of beach promenade, and a stack of BBQ pits available for public use, this is a great spot to set up sticks with the fam for a beach side picnic. Sit under the shade of the coconut trees, catch a cool breeze from the water and pretend that you’re really on a beach holiday (just ignore the oil tankers in the distant horizon mama!). It also pays to bring the soccer ball if the kiddos are keen for a kick-to-kick session (there’s plenty of lawns to play on) or the beach toys if digging in the sand is more their style. There’s plenty of toilets along the promenade too so you won’t get caught out either!

Where: East Coast Parkway, Singapore

esplanade park

Esplanade Park

One of Singapore’s oldest parks, and while it may not be filled with playgrounds and acres of grass, is still a cute little spot to stop for a sandwich with the kids. There are shaded lawns and plenty of park benches available, as well as sweeping views of Marina Bay and the Singapore CBD.

Where: Off Connaught Drive, Singapore

Fort Canning Park

Explore old forts and underground bunkers before rolling out the picnic blanket on the huge green lawns at Fort Canning Green. Pack a ball or a kite so the kiddos can play on the grass after finishing their nosh, or bring the scooters and do some laps of the reservoir on the shady paths. There are even toilets inside Fort Canning Centre.

Where: 70 River Valley Road, Singapore 179037

Hindehede Nature Park

Part of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the former quarry at Hindehede Road is now a fab spot for a little al fresco dining. Designed with families in mind, there are several playgrounds for active littlies as well as easy walking trails perfect for a post-bite wander.

Where: Hindehede Drive, Singapore

Hort Park

Hort Park

Singapore’s one-stop gardening hub is also the perfect place to let the kids roam free while you snack on your lunch time nibbles. HortLawn is the best place to plop down on the grass and even includes some shade! Post-lunch head towards the playground to let the little ones play, climb and slide!

Where: 33 Hyderabad Road, Singapore 119578

Jurong Central Park

Head west for a round of Snakes and Ladders or Ludo with the kids on the life-sized board games at Jurong Central Park. Post board game win (because you totally won right?) pull up a patch of grass on the expansive lawn and unfurl your blanket – it’s time for lunch! Restless munchkins can roam the grass or take to the 2km cycling track if they still have energy to burn.

Where: Jalan Boon Lay Junction with Boon Lay Way, Singapore

Kranji Reservoir Park

Kranji Reservoir Park is a quaint little spot to nibble on your nosh. Nab one of the pavilions or a park bench and enjoy the panoramic view of the Straits of Johor. Don’t forget the fishing rod either as there are two designated fishing spots for Rex Hunt wannabes to cast off a line.

Where: Along Kranji Way, Singapore

Labrador Park

Labrador Nature Reserve

We were already huge fans of this nature reserve, but since we discovered the shaded picnic areas along the ocean promenade, well, we just fell in love. A panoramic sea view and a refreshing breeze set the scene for a perfect picnic with the fam (there are BBQ pits available if you fancy cooking up some snags mama), where post-lunch the kiddos can burn off some energy on the huge adventure playground. There are also plenty of grassy areas for crawlers who need a patch of green to explore, as well as wide paths for scooters and even a human maze to let the kids loose in!

Sassy Mama Tip: It can get super hot here in the middle of the day (unless you manage to grab yourself a shaded picnic hut) so early evening picnics are often the way to go!

Where: Labrador Villa Road, Singapore 119187

MacRitchie Reservoir

Dine with the monkeys (that’s a joke mama!) at Singapore’s oldest and most popular nature park. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches available (as well as loos!) and a ton of wide grassy spaces to lay down your picnic blanket. Post-lunch take a hike on any of the nature trails around the reservoir (those with strollers will find it a bit of a challenge) or tackle the infamous Tree Top Walk (best for the over 5s).

Sassy Mama Tip: the reservoir is teeming with monkeys; so bear this in mind when planning your picnic. Be conscious of where (and when) you choose to eat and never have food out when hiking the trails – you’re kinda asking for trouble if you do!

Where: Off Lornie Road, Singapore 298717

Marina Barrage

Marina Barrage

For a picnic with a view nothing really beats the green expanse on the rooftop of the new Marina Reservoir! Set against the backdrop of Marina Bay, the enormous lawn is perfect for kite-flying and bubble blowing, as well as letting the kids run wild — it also enjoys gentle breezes off the water, ahhh!. Best in the evenings (there’s not a ton of shade during the day) families can enjoy their dinner while checking out the amazing views and twinkling lights of the Singapore skyline at night.

Where: 8 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018951

Pasir Ris Park

Head up to Pasir Ris for a full afternoon of family entertainment (post-picnic lunch of course!). The massive adventure playground (located in Area 3) will help blow off steam in time for sandwiches, then there’s nature trails, mangrove swamp hikes and bike riding for afters. Did we mention the huge maze or the Kitchen Garden? Or what about the beachside BBQ pits, the sea view, and the wide-open spaces for scooting? No? Let’s not forget about the pony rides either. It’s perfect for keeping the fam super busy on a otherwise quiet weekend!

Where: 52 Pasir Ris Avenue, Singapore 519736

Sembawang Park

Facing the Johor Straits, this idyllic spot makes for a quiet change from some of the inner-urban parks of S’pore. Families are particularly drawn to the beachside paths with the BBQ pits and the covered picnic tables, as well as the many walking trails perfect for a post-prandial meander. Fishing enthusiasts can even cast a line from the beach (if they are that way inclined!), unless of course the little munchkins jump in the sea for a splash first (there are even toilet blocks with showers if this the case mama!).

Where: End of Sembawang Road, Sembawang, Singapore

singapore botanic garden

Singapore Botanic Gardens

One of our favourite gardens in S’pore, this spot also scores a 10 out of 10 for ultimate convenience! Nestled in the middle of the Tanglin area, this park does ‘picnic’ very well with its abundance of wide open spaces and lush green lawns. Head to the grass near Symphony Lake for the perfect picnic space (keep an eye out for their regular outdoor concerts too!) or pull up a patch near Eco-Lake. There are plenty of toilets around as well as yummy nosh from Casa Verde if a self-catered picnic is not really your thing.

Where: 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569

St. John’s Island

If you are keen to try something a little different, pack up the kiddies early and head to Marina South Pier to catch the ferry to St. John’s Island. A mere 6.5km south of S’pore, this tiny island is home to sandy beaches and many a winding walking track. Bring the sand toys too so junior can build sandcastles whilst you sip on your wine water.

Sassy Mama Tip: There’s no food stores on the island so you’ll want to bring your own provisions.

Where: Access St. John’s Island via ferry from Marina South Pier.

West Coast Park

West Coast Park

With 50-hectares of open space, this massive park is a fantastic spot for a little nourishment (and a whola lotta adventure!). Kids adore the adventure playground with its flying fox, swings, and rope climbing pyramids, slides and play structures, while mama sits back and relaxes on the grass. If the cycling tracks, the mangrove swamp, the bicycle obstacle course, the exercise garden, the ocean promenade, the pond and the sand play area are not quite enough to keep the fam busy, there’s also BBQ pits available for hire and plenty of benches to snaffle.

Where: Parallel to West Coast Highway, Singapore

How to book your BBQ

As tempting as it might be to simply rock up and nab any available BBQ pit, it’s best to book ahead online to ensure you get the best pick of the barbequing pits (and don’t accidently steal anyone else’s steak!).

One final thought…

As much as we adore dining outside with our munchkins, like everywhere in Singapore, it pays to bring plenty of water for the fam, hats and sunscreen for the littlies and mozzie repellant to keep the bugs at bay. Because nobody wants a side of sunburn with their sandwich mama!
