The long wait is over because The Cathay at Dhoby Ghaut finally reopened its doors on 28 March 2025 after almost two years! The Cathay is a historical landmark and an urban living and shopping destination for people of all ages.
The 16-storey Cathay Building features a shopping mall from Level 1 to 6 and The Cathay Residence from Level 7 to 16. From affordable food like Saizeriya and a local food court to a 24-hour gym for fitness buffs and IUIGA for minimalist homeowners, there’s something for everyone.

History of The Cathay

Situated at the foot of Mount Sophia, The Cathay is a national monument with a rich history dating back to the early years of World War II and the Japanese occupation. When The Cathay Cinema first opened in 1939, followed by the main tower in 1941. The Cathay stood as the tallest building and was known for being Singapore’s first skyscraper and air-conditioned cinema that screened American and British films in Singapore.
Cathay Cinema first opened on 3 October 1939 and featured 1,321 seats surrounded by black marble pillars, green-tilted floors and gold ceilings. A couple of years later, The Cathay Restaurant opened on the fourth floor and became popular in the 1950s but has since shut down.
NEW! 360-degree Multimedia Screen at The Cathay

One of the newest additions to The Cathay is a three-story, 360-degree multimedia screen. This captivating addition features dynamic visuals in HD, inviting shoppers to pause and enjoy the view from all angles. There are seating steps around the display, so you can catch a break from your shopping spree or unwind with a cuppa and a good conversation, while the kiddos are entertained by the ever-changing visuals.

How to get to The Cathay
We love how convenient it is to get to The Cathay! Located at the doorstep of Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, The Cathay is a short two-minute walk, making this shopping mall easily accessible by public transport.
Parking at The Cathay

If you’re driving to The Cathay, you can access The Cathay Car Park via Handy Road. Car park rates start at $1.80 per hour on weekdays and $1.60 on weekends. You can also find alternative parking near The Cathay at Mount Sophia Carpark via Adis Road and Mount Sophia Road. For Electric Vehicles, the EV charging bay is located at Level 1M carpark (parking lots 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24).
