Find out what this mama thought when she saw MAMMA MIA! at Marina Bay Sands with her kids

Having grown up listening, dancing and prancing around the house with a mic to ABBA, I have always loved the movie MAMMA MIA!, and when it came to town as a live musical I just had to go and see it – and bring the kids to get them hooked on it, too.

The musical has been around since 1999 and has become a smash hit globally, travelling the world with sell-out shows. The story, set in Greece, is about a young woman who’s about to get married, finding out that she has three potential men who could be her biological father. She invites all three to her wedding in the hope to find out who it is. Meanwhile, her mum and best friends plan the wedding, none the wiser that the additional guests are coming. Woven into this story is the clever distribution of oldie-but-goodie ABBA songs.

Even if you don’t love ABBA, I dare you to listen to ‘Dancing Queen’ and not get up and bop to it! Then add the colorful costumes, the simple yet effective Greek sun-kissed set, men with pecs and the unbelievable voices of the all-star international cast and you’ll have no choice but to sing along and jive to the music! They had the whole audience up on their feet in the finale!

I would say it’s a family event with caution. There are a few bits of sexual innuendo (it’s kind of a key plot point, after all) but to be honest it’s quite mild and it certainly went over my 9-year-old son’s head. My kids loved it, my daughter especially – I was surprised she knew most of the catchy songs. It would also be a great night out with your girlfriends!

As for me, I immediately went home and found the soundtrack on Spotify so I could relive the moment. Really worth going to see, mamas!
