What is HYROX?

So, what is HYROX exactly? The name itself is a nod to “hybrid” and “rockstar”, combining endurance and functional fitness into a single race format. What makes HYROX so appealing is also the fact that it isn’t limited to elite competitors. With multiple race categories available, it caters to a wide range of fitness levels, from first-timers looking for a new challenge to experienced athletes aiming for competitive rankings.

Participants complete a fixed course made up of running segments and workout stations, designed to test full-body performance. The format is standardised globally, meaning whether you’re racing in Singapore or another city, the structure remains the same! This consistency allows for fair comparisons across timings, rankings and results worldwide.

Hyrox categories explained:
– Open: The most accessible, designed for general participants with standardised weights and repetitions.
– Pro: Increases the intensity with heavier loads, making it more suitable for experienced athletes.
– Singles: Compete individually and complete the full race on your own, making it the most straightforward format for those looking to take on the full HYROX experience solo.
– Doubles: Allows two participants to split the workout stations while completing the runs together. This format is popular among friends or training partners looking to share the challenge.
– Relay: A team of four divides the race. Each member completes a portion of the run and selected workout stations, making it a more manageable entry point for beginners or those new to fitness racing.

HYROX race format explained

A standard HYROX race follows a simple but demanding structure: participants complete a total of 8km of running, broken up into 1km segments. After each run, they enter a workout zone to complete one of the eight HYROX stations. This alternating run-and-workout format is what defines a typical HYROX workout. It challenges both cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength, requiring participants to manage fatigue while maintaining consistent performance throughout.

The race is held indoors, which means conditions are controlled and predictable. There’s no weather factor to account for, making it easier to train specifically for the event.

Each race includes the same eight HYROX stations, performed in the same order globally. These typically include:
– SkiErg
– Sled Push
– Sled Pull
– Burpee Broad Jumps
– Rowing
– Farmer’s Carry
– Sandbag Lunges
– Wall Balls

Each station targets different aspects of fitness, from upper body strength to grip endurance and explosive power. The combination ensures a well-rounded test of overall fitness rather than specialising in just one area.

Tips on how to prepare & train for HYROX

Preparing for HYROX requires a balanced approach (P.S. check out our list of personal trainers in Singapore!). Effective HYROX training focuses on two main components: running endurance and functional strength.

– Structure your training week: Include a mix of steady-state runs, interval training and strength circuits that mimic race movements like sled pushes, lunges and wall balls.
– Build both stamina and strength: Combining cardio and resistance work helps improve overall performance across all stations.
– Pace yourself: Going out too fast, whether in runs or early stations, often leads to burnout. Consistent effort across all eight rounds is key.
– Work on transitions: Moving efficiently between runs and workout zones can help shave off valuable time.
– Train according to your level: Beginners should focus on building a solid running base and learning proper technique. More experienced athletes should refine pacing, increase intensity and optimise transitions.
– Invest in a good training ground: A good gym with the proper equipment will help prepare you for the high-intensity challenge. You can also engage a personal trainer to help.
– Avoid common mistakes: Don’t over-prioritise strength training; the 8km total run means endurance plays a major role in overall results.
