This Hari Raya season, we’re thinking ahead and planning the most comfortable yet stylish ethnic wear for mamas
Ramadan Kareem to all the mamas celebrating! We know Ramadan has only just begun, but before we know it Hari Raya will be fast approaching and we’ll have little to no time to get shopping! So start your hunting early mamas – throughout the month there will be plenty of online sales (check out websites like FashionValet or Zalora) and weekend fairs happening all over our little island offering gorgeous Hari Raya threads.
For us mamas, dressing for weekend-long house visits has to be strategic – nothing too tight, I have to be able to bend over, I have to be able to pick up the kids, it’s gotta have air circulation, and also hide my tummy from all the food! We get you mama, which is why we’ve listed out our favourite labels with mama-friendly (and some breastfeeding-friendly!) designs so you don’t compromise on style this festive season.

Ironless, stretchable, breastfeeding-friendly and friendly on the pocket… these Bella Ammara jubahs are definitely heaven sent! For mamas who love a simple look with a touch of glam, just slip this on, match with a fab pair of shoes and you’re ready to go. Our pick has to be the Sophia Jubah in Maroon – the colour is a statement in itself!

Pants for Hari Raya visiting? Yes please! If experience has taught us anything, it’s that being able to move about (and not being restricted to a tight skirt) is the best recipe for a day out with the kids. With Blancheur‘s luxurious velvet pieces it’s easy to look all dressed up with minimum effort. Plus the fabric is so great for mamas – with its reflective quality it’s easy to hide any stains that you may have collected after eating many a rendang…
Find it: Luxe Series styles priced from $137 on FashionValet
Dahlia Mohd, founder of local multi-label store En Pointe & Co. knows a thing or two about dressing comfortably this Raya season – as a mama of 2 (going on 3!), she’s all about picking fuss free clothing that helps mamas look like they’ve ‘got it together’. Bright colours in place of detailed beading (which run the risk of scratching your bubs or having them accidentally pulling and swallowing) like the Kebaya Dwi-Warna from Norma (left) give a bright, cheery look. With a re-emerging trend in updated kebaya tops and wraps, modern additions like hook-and-eye closures or buttons as seen on Afiq M designs (centre) make for versatile, practical designs for breastfeeding mamas. Darker colours will let you get away with any play spills, while cotton and other natural fibres are easier to wash and iron – we’re loving the Salmiah Kebaya from Syomirizwa Gupta (right) which is also machine washable! En Pointe & Co. also offers designs that go up to size UK18.

Maxi dresses are always a good idea. Even better when they’ve got adjustable sleeves, with a set for your mini-me to match! We love the laidback styles by Jahit.Online, a local Instagram-based label with an affiliation to kidswear line PickADillyBaby (who we featured in our Kids Hari Raya Fashion guide last year!). The billowing silhouette in their Layla piece (pictured, right) makes it perfect for both mamas and mamas-to-be. Each design is also made in limited quantities, allowing you to be one of the few people in our little red dot to own a Jahit.Online piece!
Find it: Prices range from $105 – $125, available via direct message on @Jahit.Online
Who better than a fellow mama to design outfits that allow easy movement this Hari Raya? Founder of local bridal house The Wedding Brocade, Katt Ibrahim has been creating ready-to-wear pieces since 2017. This year’s capsule collection is made up of vibrant pieces with quirky prints and lovely flared styles (food baby? What food baby?) in comfy linen! If the mermaid cut skirt isn’t your thing, swap it out for a straight-cut style or pants for better mobility while you go out visiting!
Her collections always sell out super quickly, so make sure to drop by their booth (C14) at Celebfest 2018: Ramadhan Edition at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre this weekend to grab yours!
Find it: Prices range from $80 for brocade skirts to $220 for exclusive limited edition pieces. Keep up with them on Instagram for more pop-up updates!
From glamorous tops to pair with your favourite dress pants to flowy abayas, Malaysian label Mimpikita always reps the mama tribe! They even have beautiful kebaya styles that are slightly less form-fitting than the traditional designs, giving you more freedom to move about (or should we say, chase after the kids?).
Find it: Prices start from $110 on FashionValet
Who’s up for a Bollywood-inspired outfit this Hari Raya? Prolific Malaysian designer Rizalman has teamed up with Zalora to create a culture-rich collection of Indian-inspired garments perfect for dancing in. The collaboration features pieces at an affordable range, allowing the masses to own a piece of the couturier’s designs. Big earrings may not be the best accessory (keep out of reach of children…) but we’re all for stacking bangles to complete the look!
Find it: Prices start from $100, available on Zalora
Can’t see yourself wearing any high-maintenance fabrics for fear of the kids spilling a drink on you, mama? Whimsigirl’s got your back with their effortless 100% cotton baju kurungs (some are even bump- and breastfeeding-friendly), available in lovely muted colours like mustard, maroon, mint and Sassy Mama pink. You can even get a matching set for your little ones – available in styles for both girls and boys! We also love that the woman behind the brand is a mama of two, who often talks about how her clever designs are created to make the lives of other mamas that much easier!
Find it: Adult baju kurung sets from $116 and kids’ styles from $58, available on FashionValet
