Like its previous editions, you can expect plenty of creative artwork, exciting programmes and dazzling light displays.
Nature’s Shades of Green at i Light Singapore 2024
All visuals and art installations in i Light Singapore 2024 will be centred around the colour green – shades of which are commonly found in natural environments like the grass and trees. This colour is also associated with sustainability, which is what the artists behind these vibrant displays hope to encourage visitors to reflect on as they wander through the impressive light installations.
What else can you expect at i Light Singapore 2024?
The talented artists have incorporated innovative technology to create mesmerising art pieces to give visitors a multi-sensory experience like no other. Here’s what you can look forward to the i Light Singapore 2024 festival:
i Light Singapore 2024 Highlights
1. Spin Me a Yarn: IG-worthy larger-than-life yarn balls
As the name suggests, Spin Me a Yarn is inspired by yarn, an essential material used in the fashion industry. United Kingdom-based Studio Vertigo strives to remind us of the need to reverse unsustainable practices in our modern lifestyles, as the fast fashion industry significantly contributes to global pollution.
Location: Mist Walk at Marina Bay
2. Kinetic Perspective: light-up optical illusions from upcycled iron
This super cool-looking art installation is made out of upcycled iron remnants from industrial sources and inspired by optical illusions. Marvel as the circles move continuously to create a variety of combinations and transform an ordinary object into something spectacular.
Location: Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza
3. Liminal;Minimal: art installation at the waterfront
Liminal;Minimal was designed by students from Singapore University of Technology and Design, Benjamin Lim and Yeo Soon Yii, who use repurposed materials from building sites to spotlight the issue of construction waste. Set against the backdrop of the Marina Bay waterfront promenade, they hope to remind visitors to pursue more sustainable practices to preserve our planet’s future.
Location: Marina Bay waterfront promenade
4. BottleBlooms: luminous plastic bottles
Kids (and grown-ups alike!) will be mesmerised by these solar-powered luminous plastic blossoms that were crafted from approximately 1,000 upcycled polyethene terephthalate (PET) bottles. BottleBlooms urges visitors to think about how often we mindlessly throw things away when they could be transformed and given a new purpose.
Location: Tanjong Pagar Park at Guocco Tower, Tras Link Park near Orchid Hotel Singapore
5. Kickit Team Tennis: interactive light art game
Kickit Team Tennis is inspired by the modern tennis game but reimagined for team play, so you’ll have to interact and collaborate with strangers to make this game work. This is a call to find common ground and unity with others through friendly competition and play.
Location: Discover Tanjong Pagar Community Green
6. Hidden Garden: light-up inflatable flowers
The Hidden Garden illustrates how nature transforms the concrete jungle and forms a symbiosis and harmonious co-existence as we continue to move towards further urban development. Mimicking blades of grass that burst forth through concrete, this radiant artwork depicts its tenacious growth and enduring vitality.
Location: Tras Link Park
7. Lumi: interactive art installation
Lumi resembles Singapore’s meandering river paths and its perpetual state of flux. Visitors are invited to play, connect and reflect on the bustling urban landscape. Watch how this interactive artwork changes as you touch each part and remould the artwork with people you’ve never met. These repurposed yoga balls show us that every mundane object can be transformed into something beautiful.
Location: Fountain Plaza, South Beach Avenue, Level 1
8. The Lantern: artwork with upcycled plastic water bottles
The Lantern is made out of over 5,000 upcycled plastic water bottles that mirror the astounding amount of bottles disposed of in Singapore every seven minutes! It is a sobering reminder of the collective harm water bottles do to the environment and encourages visitors to reflect on their daily lives and work towards a more sustainable future.
Location: Courtyard between South Beach Tower and The Ground Ballroom, Level 1
9. Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness: interactive installation
The Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness juxtaposes a guru with the contemporary pursuit of fulfilment. As you walk through the ceremonial shroud, you will be greeted by the Modern Guru, a translucent ovoid with four large digital eyes suspended above a ring of LEDs. When you point the lens of your camera to capture a glimpse of the Modern Guru, you’ll find a message.
Location: Millenia Walk (The Great Hall)
10. Arc Zero: Nimbus
This one’s perfect for pictures, but be sure to arrive early because crowds gather quickly at this popular display! Arc Zero: Nimbus is a ring of mist that encircles the floating walkway, creating the illusion of framing the city.
Location: Pontoon near Red Dot Design Museum
11. BOB the nice world
BOB the Nice World is almost too adorable to miss! At first glance, this big inflatable might resemble Disney’s Baymax, but it’s actually a whimsical line-drawn character named Bob. Bob glows with positivity while subtly (and cutely) calling for action against climate change.
Location: Next to the entrance to Marina Bay Link Mall
12. Iwagumi Air Scape
Possibly the biggest display this year, Iwagumi Air Scape draws inspiration from the Japanese art form of Iwagumi, which involves arranging rocks in aquascaping or underwater gardening. This stunning installation is perfect for photos from any angle, especially with the breathtaking Singapore skyline or Marina Bay Sands in the background.
Location: The Promontory at Marina Bay
13. Fountain of Happiness
The Fountain of Happiness is an interactive display featuring seven sets of swings and light tubes that change colours with every swing. We promise that this one’s not just fun for the kids, but for the adults too!
Location: Clifford Square
Apart from the artworks and light displays, i Light Singapore 2024 will also feature a range of complementary activities and programmes.
