The Year of the Dragon is already peeking around the corner, and some of us mamas are already planning our family reunion dinners and shopping for new CNY outfits! The 2024 Chinese New Year street light-up in Chinatown is always a highlight with plenty of beautiful lanterns and other Year of the Dragon-themed decorative displays and street lights along New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Upper Cross Street and Eu Tong Sen Street.

Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2024

The Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2024 takes place from 16 January to 25 February 2024 at the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. This CNY event will bring an exciting line-up of programmes and CNY activities, from festive drumming workshops to temple tours and heritage trails. Check out the two auspicious red and orange dragons that stand four metres tall on the front lawn. This CNY outdoor installation titled Prosperity All Year LONG is a reimagination of local toy designer and artist Ziqi’s popular character, Dino, and is also based on this year’s Chinese zodiac animal, the mythical dragon, which symbolises success, strength, nobility, abundance and good luck. ⁠

Look out for the auspicious lion and dragon dance performances and a visit from the God of Fortune. There’ll also be storytelling and craft activities for children, perfect for those who are looking for an exciting way to ring in the Lunar New Year with their families. Kids aged 6 and up can sign up for a Dragon’s Beard Candy Making Workshop, while younger kids aged 4 to 12 years old can join a Parent-Child Mythical Creatures Bag Making Workshop. River Hongbao 2024

River Hongbao 2024 is Singapore’s largest annual Chinese New Year event at Gardens by the Bay. This year, there will be a ginormous, 140-metre long Dragon-themed lantern and free firecracker shows (timings here). There will be plenty more stunning lanterns including the huge God of Fortune lantern for fab photo ops. Kids will love the carnival rides and entertaining cultural performances and CNY activities.

Embark on a long quest for wisdom with the kids and join in fun games and CNY activities to redeem LEGO builds. Lion Dance & Craft Workshop at IKEA

IKEA is one of our favourite places to take the kids shopping (free playground and meatballs!), and it’s a perfect place to pick up new things to spruce up your home for the Lunar New Year. This CNY, join a craft workshop to create a Chinese dragon puppet (for kids aged 5 to 12 years old) and catch the traditional lion dance for a prosperous new year! More info here.

Catch a spectacular lion dance performance by Singapore Yiwei Athletic Association at Marina Square Singapore! They are an award-winning lion dance troupe, so you’ll be in for a special treat as they dance on high poles to rhythmic drums, gongs and cymbals. Plus, the God of Fortune will make an appearance to give out toy plushies to 28 lucky guests! Snap photos with the Chinese Zodiac Characters at the Spring Garden or get hands-on with a melt-in-your-mouth Dragon’s Beard Candy Making Workshop.

Chingay 2024 returns to the F1 Pit

The 2024 Chingay Parade promises to be a Chinese New Year activity to remember! This year’s Chingay Parade features a floral extravaganza and wishes everyone a blossoming start to the Year of the Dragon. This year’s theme of ‘Blossom’ represents the flourishing and growth of the individual and community in Singapore, as we unite to work towards peace, harmony and prosperity. From vibrant costumes to special effects and eclectic dance performances, stilt-walkers, singers and more the 2024 Chingay parade will feature six captivating acts. Look out for Singapore’s longest floor projection of an enchanting garden, IG-worthy backdrops at PAssionArts Street, and beautiful blossom-themed art installations made from recycled materials by students. There will also be lots of art activities where you and the kids can unleash your creative talent as you’re inspired by the mesmerising art installations at PAssionArts Street. Museum Roundtable Hongbao 2024

In keeping with tradition, the Museum Roundtable Lunar New Year Hongbao 2024 Campaign will be back this Chinese New Year with all-new red packet designs featuring the Year of the Dragon! Visit any of the 43 participating museums, heritage institutions, and galleries between 12 January to 9 February to collect a set of eight red packets. Each museum, heritage institution, and gallery will have a different design on their red packet, so make sure to visit and collect them all for the upcoming Lunar New Year! More info here.
