Chinese New Year 2017: Our Guide to Singapore’s Top CNY Events

There’s so much to do with the kids this CNY!

Time is of the essence this year as we kick off the Year of The Rooster, mama! The zodiac animal has been seen as an important keeper of time since the olden days, playing the indispensable role of distinguishing between dawn and daybreak. Celebrate as the streets come alive with the yearly Chinatown light-up, fun CNY-themed workshops and classes, lots of shopping and more. Have a blast this CNY, and don’t forget to greet others with a hearty gong xi fa cai, mamas!

Gong SEA Fa Cai at S.E.A. Aquarium

Get up close with this year’s star animal – the rooster hogfish – and uncover fun facts about other auspicious marine life this Chinese New Year, mama! From the leafy sea dragon to abalone, learn how to save these precious, threatened sea creatures. You can also catch dazzling underwater dragon dances, rub shoulders with Mai the Manta mascot for a bit of good luck, do a lucky meet-and-greet with the Ancient S.E.A. Guardian (who may even have lucky chocolate golden coins for those who complete the Trail of the Rooster)! Families can also enjoy a special online promotion at $34 per adult that includes admission to the Pokémon Research Exhibition and a $5 retail voucher (requires a minimum of two adult tickets).

Chinatown Festivals

First and foremost, immerse the family in traditional CNY culture with all the happenings in Chinatown! For a spot of festive shopping, browse over 440 festive market stalls as you admire the beautiful street decorations and lights. The amazing lights display is sure to have you (and little ones) in awe. History buffs can even take in the sights with a guided walking trail.

Chinatown Street Light Up
The official light up and opening ceremony will be followed by 7 weeks of illumination along the streets of Chinatown. The light-up features handmade sculptured lanterns of the rooster, hen and chick, with stories of Chinese traditional values. Combining traditions with modern design by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the creativity of the contemporary street light-up design is sure to amaze visitors. Among this year’s unique features is a high-tech Huat Greetings Wall, where visitors can send their well wishes online and will then see them appear on the screen in floating lanterns. While shopping or sightseeing in the area, keep a lookout for the 13-metre tall rooster (seen in our main photo above) as you may just catch it opening its mouth and crowing a total of 8 times every 15 minutes!

Festive Street Bazaar
Besides a wide range of Chinese New Year-themed delicacies, traditional goodies, decorative items and costumes, you’ll be in for a treat at the YouthEATS section at Temple Street! 12 enterprising entrepreneurs, including kids, will set up shop offering a mix of popular and unique, updated festive eats to tantalise the taste buds.

When: Through 27 January 2017, 6pm – 10:30pm daily, 6pm – 1am on Chinese New Year’s Eve

Chinatown Walking Trail
Discover Chinatown’s heritage and culture in this free walking trail that covers Kreta Ayer Road, Sago Street, Pagoda Street and New Bridge Road. Each trail is conducted in English.

When: 8, 14,15,21 & 22 January 2017, 3:30pm – 5pm

Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party
Want to be surrounded by festive cheer on CNY Eve? Usher in the Year of the Rooster with live performances and a rousing countdown celebration with MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown. Be entertained by the lively performances from a medley of festive songs, skits to interactive games as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks. Just come prepared for crowds, mama!

Chinatown Wishing Trees
Make your New Year wishes come true at the Chinatown Wishing Tree! You’ll also be giving to charity to help the needy elderly. Write wishes for yourself and your loved ones on the “Make a Wish” card and hang them on the banyan tree. Through this meaningful community event, you can bring festive cheers to the less fortunate and reaching out to them with your helping hands.

When: Through 27 January 2017, 11am – 9pm daily

How much: Each wishing card costs $2 and all proceeds will be donated to the Kreta Ayer Seniors ‘ Activity Centre.

Nightly Stage Shows
Catch nightly performances at Kreta Ayer Square during the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations. The popular gathering point for local Chinese communities during this time lives up to its deeply rooted affinity to Chinese culture and it is also the place where you can find the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, or take a break from your festive shopping. Be entertained by lively and vibrant Chinese cultural performances, festive songs, songs, music and dance performances by local entertainers and troupes from China.

Chingay Parade

The Chingay parade, the annual largest street performance and float parade in Asia, will make an appearance in Chinatown this year to bring the celebrations to a great height but also marking the end of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Join us with your family and friends for a vibrant night that includes special performances by local and overseas performers, not to mention more than 10 beautifully decorated and illuminated floats.

National Museum of Singapore

Interesting programmes happening at the National Museum include A Lighter Side of History: A Lion Dance Costume Maker, where full-time lion dance costume craftsman Mr Henry Ng will share the story of his journey in the industry and demonstrate key portions of the costume crafting process. Also keep your eyes peeled for more details on the Lunar New Year Lion Dance Performance happening on 11 February!

River Hongbao Carnival

Look forward to 10 days of fun-filled extravaganza of lights, sights and sounds to celebrate the festivities with modern, futuristic elements and a strong local flavour. Larger-than-life lantern displays are colourful and fun, with nightly fireworks and laser displays, intricate handicrafts and crowd-pleasing performances featuring local and exotic programmes from the region. Satiate your taste buds with more than 40 sumptuous varieties of local and regional delicacies served at the largest outdoor Food Street in Singapore. A myriad of fringe activities, ranging from amusement rides to carnival games to Main Stage performances, will ensure that there’s never a dull moment at River Hongbao!

Wildlife Reserves Singapore

With 2017 being the Year of the Rooster, it’s the perfect time to learn all about the rooster and its fowl family. Embark on a guided Fowl Trail at Jurong Bird Park and discover a charismatic assortment of pheasants, peafowls and jungle fowls in their aviaries, specially decked out in festive cheer for the Rooster Year. Sentosa

The State of Fun celebrates CNY in a big way! Guests born in the Year of the Rooster can present your identity card at Sentosa Station redemption booth on 21 – 22 January 2017, 9am – 9pm to receive one Island Admission Ticket and one Singapore Cable Car Sky Pass for free entry to Sentosa between 28 Jan – 30 Jan 2017. Other free programmes include a stunning showcase of 12 Zodiac lanterns measuring up to 2m in height at Palawan Green, each stylised to tell heart-warming love stories, the nightly Merlion Magic Lights! showThank You For the Music (音乐的傻瓜) mini concert for the whole fam and more!

PlayLAH!

Organised by SingEx, PlayLAH! promises to be a carnival for the senses, where children of all ages can shout their favourite seasonal greeting as they slide down a thrilling 9-metre high rooster slide or challenge themselves as they make their way through an 18-metre long bouncy obstacle course. There will be daily live performances on stage as well, which will introduce traditional performance arts such as Nanyin and Chinese dance to a whole new generation of Singaporeans.

New Beginnings at KidZania Singapore

The kid-sized city comes to life as it celebrates its first Lunar New Year with a host of activities that is sure to bring happiness for the whole family. From role-play activities inspired by the traditions of the Lunar New Year, to special Lunar New Year Art & Calligraphy activities, to a magnificent Wushu Performance, and an exciting B.KidZanian Hongbao Giveaway, parents and kids can look forward to welcoming the Year of the Rooster with New Beginnings at KidZania Singapore.

Ding Yi Music Company’s ‘Happy Chinese New Year Concert 2017’

On the heels of last year’s successful event, Ding Yi will collaborate with the China Cultural Centre to present a 75-minute musical extravaganza that was originally performed for Chinese President Xi Jinping at a state dinner hosted by President Tony Tan. Highlights will include the vocal stylings of renowned soprano Zhou Xiao Man, a capella renditions from the local Apex Project, traditional Cantonese gaohu and traditional sheng instrumentals, and a medley of classical Chinese folk songs under the baton of Assistant Conductor Dedric Wong.

ION Orchard

What’s unique about the celebrations at ION Orchard this year is the Chinese Garden, which features a unique fish pond with an interactive digital screen so visitors can ‘touch’ the fishes and lily pads. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands has transformed the Grand Colonnade South (between Chanel and Gucci) into a boulevard reminiscent of blooming gardens in Spring.
