Nightbooks – Now on Netflix!

Based on the popular children’s book by J.A. White, Nightbooks revolves around Alex Mosher, a Brooklyn native who’s obsessed with horror stories. But his knack for writing scary stories also means he’s often alienated by his peers. When Alex decides he’s had enough, he heads to the basement to burn his stories but somehow ends up in a wicked witch’s magical apartment where he must tell a spine-tingling tale every night or remain trapped in the apartment forever.

Produced by horror mastermind Sam Raimi, Nightbooks is a delightful watch for children aged at least 10 and up. In addition to some frightening visuals – think creepy dolls, freaky monsters, ghosts with white eyes and children being locked in a cave filled with skulls – the movie also has plenty of jump scares (one sent our bowl of cereal flying). Scary scenes aside, the movie has plenty of positives, too, because it shows children the importance of treasuring friendships, as well as practising teamwork and cooperation in tough situations. Most importantly, Nightbooks also highlights why you should always be true to yourself even when those around you say otherwise.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: in Cinemas Now!

Shaun (aka Shang-Chi) and his best friend, Katy, work as parking valets by day and sing loads of karaoke by night. Eventually, Shaun’s hidden past catches up with him when the Ten Rings find him in San Francisco and steal his pendant, which is the key to finding the ancient village of Ta Lo. Shaun must reunite with his estranged sister and protect Ta Lo from his father, who wishes to unlock the village’s darkest secret for his own gain.

Stunning visuals, catchy soundtrack, top-tier Asian representation, gorgeous costumes and impressive martial arts choreography – there’s plenty to love about the latest theatrical adventure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is good fun for kids (the fight scenes are almost entirely bloodless), but there are several points in the course of the film that may prompt questions about grief, loss and death. It’s PG 13 but Common Sense Media says the movie is suitable for kids aged 11 and above. Oh, and be sure to stay till the end for the usual Marvel mid- and post-credit stingers with familiar faces from previous MCU outings. You won’t be disappointed, we promise!
