Singapore’s Newest Play Space (for the Entire Family!): Tanderra Club Loewen Gardens

As Sassy Mamas, we’re always trying to find the perfect balance between keeping the kiddos happy and, well, doing so without spending our lives at indoor playgrounds and amusement parks. Every now and then it’s nice to use our free time to take a shopping break, to chat over a quiet coffee with friends, or even nip off for a quick pedicure or massage.

Barbara Deay, a Reggio Emilia-trained educator and the former Assistant Director of Sassy Mama-fave The Blue House, has come up with a brilliant solution: The Tanderra Club. Set amongst a cluster of historic, restored Black & Whites in an unbelievably lush and idyllic spot near Dempsey Hill, Tanderra (the Aboriginal word for resting place) is set to open in February as a leisure destination for the entire family.

“I envision a welcome and homey place where kids can touch, and fully appreciate Singapore and its location,” says Barbara, who painstakingly restored the dilapidated Black & Whites in colonial style (with a touch of sophisticated, custom-designed Balinese furniture).

Littlies will be able to choose from four amazing Reggio Emilia-inspired play spaces that emphasise discovery, play, exploration, and community. Under the supervision of trained, experienced educators kiddos can try their hands at art, or go outside for some incredible sand and water play (wait till you see their custom-built sand pit, mamas!).

With an emphasis on natural materials and good old imagination, these mixed-age spaces (with availability for children from 6 months all the way up to 12 years) are mercifully free of the flashing lights and loud noises that sometimes do our heads in at other play areas.

Kids will also be able to play in the sparkling new splash pool, or take swimming lessons in the 20m lap pool (adults and helpers can take swimming lessons, too!) with a certified teacher.

Tanderra will also offer school holiday programs all year-round, ranging from sports, to dance, to drama. Barbara has enlisted some of Singapore’s best and most experienced organisations to run these camps, including Take a Bow Productions, Evolve Dance and Titans Rugby Club. There will also be a homework club for older kids, and school buses will be able to drop kids off in a secure environment to meet up with their parents who might be on site for classes.

And don’t worry mamas, Barbara didn’t forget about you! From the gorgeous Nutmeg Spa that will offer hair and nail treatments, to a bevy of fitness classes like Ooberfit boot camp with renowned trainer Sam Blakey, Pilates, Zumba and AquaSpin, to the welcoming, light-filled café (lovingly called “The Officers’ Mess” in homage to the area’s former military residents), Tanderra looks to be a bit of a sanctuary for mamas. (It doesn’t hurt that it’s just down the hill from some of our favourite shopping and dining spots at Dempsey, either!).

Barbara also envisions ad hoc maternal health talks and seminars, and will include Pre- and Post-natal Yoga among the fitness offerings.

We love that there will be options for both accompanied (that is, parent and child) and unaccompanied classes. Sometimes the family that sweats together stays together, but sometimes everyone in the family just needs their own space!

And there will be plenty of that: imagine a leisurely Sunday afternoon strolling through Tanderra’s lush gardens, or kicking a football around on the sprawling lawn. We all know space is at a premium in Singapore, and Tanderra offers it in spades. There’s even free parking!

Tanderra will open with a soft launch in mid-February, with an eye toward its big grand opening in mid-to-late March. While the club will ultimately be members-only, during the soft opening period the public is welcome to come and try out the club’s stunning facilities to decide for themselves if they’d like to join.

Club memberships will range from $175 per month per family for a “Silver” membership (including access to all facilities); to $250 per month for “Gold” membership (facilities access + 5 hours of play space time + 1 core adult or child class); to $475 for a “Platinum” membership (facilities access + 14 hours of play space time + 4 core adult or children’s classes + 10% off additional classes). Memberships require a one-year commitment, but there’s no joining fee.

Sassy Mama Perk:
During the club’s “soft opening” period from February through mid-March, Sassy Mama readers can enjoy $5 off the regular play space hourly rate (normally $15 per hour, available 1-4 hours per day). Just make sure to mention Sassy Mama when you book in!
