University College London Cancer Biomedicine student, Sreejana is a recent alum of GIIS. Here’s why she reckons GIIS is an ideal place to build your child’s academic foundation
Meet Global Indian International School (GIIS) graduate Sreejana Basu, a Cancer Biomedicine student at University College London, nanotechnology researcher and co-founder of a stealth startup. As a graduate of the 2022 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), Sreejana credits GIIS’s teachers, the IBDP coordinator and the university counsellor for guiding her towards the university and research that best fits her interests and skill set. She says, “I had asked my teachers for advice on where to apply, what I should do for my personal statement, and each and every one of them has been so helpful in giving me advice on what to write, what not to write, and I think that really made a difference for me.” She identifies her holistic experience at GIIS in developing the skills she needed to succeed in higher education.
GIIS focuses on holistic education
GIIS is an international school that offers a well-rounded education to K-12 students from a variety of nationalities and backgrounds in Singapore. Through multiple international curricula options, skills-based studios and collaborative learning spaces, with the support of experienced and skilled teachers, students are prepared for a future in any global context. With abundant opportunities to pursue sports, performing and visual arts and other extracurricular activities, GIIS students are truly given a holistic school experience.
The IBDP at GIIS prepares students for university education and beyond. Eleven and 12th grade students are given an educational foundation that will support any academic pursuit or career path. By encouraging independent and critical thinking, developing research skills and detailed inquiry, students are able to grow in these areas, providing them a strong foundation for the future.
Students are given the flexibility to choose subjects within six prescribed subject groups, and then they dive deep into those six chosen subjects. The DP also includes three additional components that round out their experience: the Theory of Knowledge which trains students in critical thinking and expands their worldview, the Extended Essay which gives students exposure to writing a research paper, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), which allows students an opportunity to grow in giving back. How have they done? IBDP students at GIIS have consistently performed well: For the last 5 years, the average score has been 37.5 points, well above the World Average score of 30.9 points.
GIIS graduates go on to top universities
What about university placement? Since 2019, more than 250 of GIIS’s IBDP students have been placed in the top 20 universities around the world (according to the QS World University Ranking 2023), including universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UC Berkeley, UCLA, NUS and NTU. This year, GIIS students have received 121 offers already from the top 50 universities in the world, including four offers from Oxford. Final IBDP scores will confirm these placements!
Teachers at GIIS have the mandate to support their students beyond academic excellence: they motivate, counsel and mentor their students to help them make wise choices in their subjects, identify strengths and weaknesses, give them guidance on university choices, provide reference letters when needed and more. GIIS offers individual counselling, webinars and education fairs and supports students with alumni connections. It’s no wonder that students like Sreejana Basu credit their success to the holistic education and support offered by GIIS!
