Singapore Polo Club

If you are looking for something a little different to do with the kiddos for a week night dinner, and you really fancy dinner with a view…head to The Singapore Polo Club and have a meal with the horses!

It might (or might not be) a well-loved secret but on weeknights the dining and bar facilities at the Polo Club are open to non-members. The Verandah is where you’ll want to be with the munchkins though because it affords the most stunning views of the racetrack. It’s kind of hard to believe you’re in a city with 5 million people in it when you pull up a chair on the verandah — the race track is huge, the surrounds are green but most of all it’s so quiet and peaceful (except for when my 3-year-old started getting a bit restless!).

Tuesday and Thursday nights are the best times to eat at the club however because the horses are run around the track (fun!) and practice polo matches are also played from 5pm (double fun!). As the horses do laps of the track they come so close to the verandah that my 3-year-old couldn’t do anything other than stare, before proclaiming loudly, “look at the horses mama!”. It’s a lovely way to get close to these beautiful animals that doesn’t include actually having to help the kids get on a horse! Besides, getting the kids to watch the match is the perfect way to keep them entertained while you eat your meal!

The menu at the club is a happy mix of Indian, Western, Chinese and local cuisine. There’s a separate kids menu that has everything from spaghetti bolognese to pizzas, to chicken nuggets, hot dogs and fries. It’s not exactly loaded up on healthy veggie-laden options but then again, we didn’t visit solely for the food! Prices for non-members are slightly higher (a couple of bucks at best) but it’s still a decently priced meal (mama’s Indian curry was delicious!). They even have all the assorted kid-friendly dining accessories you’d expect, like highchairs, colouring-in sheets and plastic plates and cutlery.

When we visited on a Tuesday night, the vibe at the Verandah restaurant was perfectly chilled — so chilled that service was fairly relaxed too. Clear blue skies, warm breezes and the beautiful greenery meant it was a really nice meal out with my 3-year-old son and somewhere that we’ll definitely return to again soon!
