Tucked away in a reformed shophouse in the bustling Boat Quay area, there’s a quaint coffee spot that makes it super easy to snuggle up to a furry friend. Singapore’s first “Cat Cafe” is home to 13 adoptee moggies, and for mamas with kiddos 7+ (teeny tinies aren’t allowed, we’re afraid!) it’s a lovely place to chill for a bit with a cappuccino and a friendly feline.
Helmed by owner, Sue Lynn Tan, Neko no Niwa is much the same as a regular cafe, except that it’s full of playful cats that live, eat, and sleep on the premises. These rescued kitties are all handpicked with personalities that suit an interactive cat cafe lifestyle — that means they’re happy to mooch around humans, enjoy a bit of a cuddle, and are content to be around other felines too!
Inspired by the popular cat cafes found across Japan, Sue wanted to introduce the same concept to Singapore, sharing the joy of cat ownership and spreading the message to adopt and not buy! And while you can’t bring your own family moggie to this cafe (sorry mamas!) you are allowed to take as many pictures as you please.
The first hour of cat snuggling will put you back $12 (with an extra charge of $5 per extra half hour of cuddling) and mamas are welcome to enjoy a sweet treat and a bit of cat therapy in this bright space. Patting and grooming is warmly encouraged, while over-the-top kitty squishing is not — kiddos 7 years and over are welcome too, as long as mama or papa is nearby to supervise.
So if you’re looking for quiet space away from the hustle and bustle of the city, or you’ve got a cat-loving big kid on your hands, look to Neko no Niwa to provide the purr-fect sanctuary, mama!
Special thanks to goes to the fabulous Gunilla from SugarLight Photography for taking these gorgeous photos!
