Here’s where to buy unassembled Gingerbread House Kits to decorate at home as well as ready-made Gingerbread Houses.

In my family, assembling our own gingerbread house and decorating it with copious amounts of white frosting, jellies and candies is one of the kids’ favourite Christmas traditions alongside putting up the Christmas tree and creating our homemade felt fireplace! Living in the tropics, it can be hard getting into the festive feels, but nothing puts a smile on our little ones’ faces more than a house smelling of gingerbread and a tray of candies to decorate a gingerbread house with (yes, we know most of them end up in little mouths!).

Read on for all the places in Singapore where you can get your hands on a gingerbread house kit to assemble and decorate at home. Or check out our gingerbread recipe and get yourself Gingerbread house cookie cutters here. You can even use our free downloadable cut-out template if you want to make your own. Make your own Gingerbread House: Recipe

IKEA Ginger bread house kits

Bake up your own Gingerbread House from scratch, or make a batch of gingerbread cookies and your house is guaranteed to smell just like Christmas! Download our free printable template for help cutting out the gingerbread house walls, roof, chimney etc, and try out our recipe below (remember to roll the dough out thin enough so you have enough dough for the template!)

Prep Time: 45m, Bake Time: 15m, Ready In: 1 hour

Ingredients

– 370 grams (3 cups) plain flour
– 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of baking soda
– 3 teaspoons ground ginger
– 1 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1 teaspoon ground cloves
– Pinch of salt
– 100g unsalted butter, softened
– 150g brown sugar
– 4 tablespoons honey (or light molasses)
– 3 tablespoons water

To decorate your gingerbread house:

– Royal Icing: 3 cups icing (confectioners’s/powdered) sugar, sifted mixed on high speed with 2 egg whites (ideally pasteurised), and ½ teaspoon cream of tartar. Keep covered when not using to prevent it from hardening.
Sweets: lots of coloured candies, candy canes and smarties.

Directions

  1. Cut out the gingerbread house template (download from here).
  2. Sift together all the dry ingredients: flour, bicarbonate of soda, spices and salt.
  3. Using an electric mixer, cream together butter and brown sugar until pale and creamy. Then pour in the honey and water and mix until well combined.
  4. Using a wooden spoon (or your mixer on low speed), gradually incorporate the flour mixture into the butter mixture until it comes together. Then knead the dough gently on a floured surface until it becomes a smooth dough. If it feels too sticky, add a little more flour while kneading. If it is too dry, you can add a small amount of water.
  5. Shape into a ball, cover with cling wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to rest and make it easier to work with later.
  6. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Line baking trays with non-stick baking paper and set aside.
  7. Between two sheets of non-stick baking paper, roll dough out. Remember to roll the dough out thin enough so you have enough dough for the template! Place template sections on top of dough and cut to shape. Repeat with remaining dough, re-rolling the trimmings, until you have two side walls, a front and back wall and two roof panels and a chimney.
  8. Place the gingerbread pieces back into the fridge for about 15 minutes before baking as they tend to hold their shape a lot better.
  9. Bake gingerbread in oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool to hard on the tray for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. This is really important as if they are not completely cool and hard then your gingerbread house won’t stand up!
  10. Once cool, pipe generous amounts of icing using a piping bag along the wall edges, one by one, to join the walls together. Use a small bowl to support the walls from the inside, then allow to dry, ideally for a few hours. Once dry, remove the supports and pipe icing onto the roof panels and chimney to fix on. Once dry it’s time to let the kids decorate using the remaining icing as glue to fix on the candies and sweets!
