Top 5 Reasons Open-Air Cinema is Amazing

Films At The Fort gives you a chance to experience open-air cinema in style – think affordable gourmet food, a fully-stocked bar and quality films (plus a discount for Sassy Mamas!)

While it’s not exactly our answer to the drive-in cinemas of yesteryear, Films At The Fort presented by Casillero del Diablo wine is nonetheless stylish retro — we wish every cinema could be just like it! Bid adieu to dirty cinema seats, musky indoor air and overpriced theatre food – we give you 5 reasons why under the stars at Fort Canning Park is the best way to catch a film.

1. It’s the most social way to enjoy a movie (that is, it’s perfect for date night)

Imagine an evening of relaxed chatting with the hubs or your best pals before, during and after the movie. If you arrive early to the outdoor theatre at Fort Canning Green (doors open at 5pm and the movie starts playing at 7:30pm), you’ll get the chance to grab a glass of wine and catch up with friends as the sun sets. Doesn’t that already sound better than arriving as the film begins, sitting in a dark room and filing out of a mall like you’d do at a typical cinema?

2. BUELLER?…BUELLER?…BUELLER?…Enjoy something different from the usual blockbusters

The film programme is chock full of award-winning features that have been carefully curated to ensure audiences can enjoy a range of quality films. In fact, most of these award-winning films aren’t available in Singapore’s cinemas! We’ve got our eyes on Sunday Grand Jury-winner Me and Earl and The Dying Girl, all-time classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Offand award-winning French love story Mon Roi, among others.

3. Trade stale popcorn for gourmet fare (or bring your own grub, guilt-free!)

Gourmet food and cinemas almost never go hand-in-hand, but this time it’s possible, mama. The foodie folks at The Providore have an onsite kitchen at every screening, serving up a tasty and affordable menu that includes everything from cheese and charcuterie platters to burgers and quinoa salad. Plus bonus: if you really want to have your popcorn and eat it too, you can even bring your own food! Check out the full food menu here, mama.

4. Alcohol gets a thumbs up

For those looking for a little buzz, there’s a fully-stocked bar serving Casillero del Diablo wines, premium beers and boutique ciders, plus a range of non-alcoholic bevvies. Just bear in mind that you can’t bring your own alcohol and all bags will be checked. Bottoms up!

5. You won’t miss anything if you have to get more food or head to the restroom

Every screening has a 15-minute intermission period halfway through the film, which is actually one of our favourite parts of the night. The DJ plays funky tunes while the audience can discuss the movie amongst themselves, fuel up, or hit the cubicles before kicking back for the second half of the film.

We love how chill and casual the seating is, too. Either bring your own blanket or cushion, or purchase a super-comfy inflatable (and reusable!) seat for just $14. We think it’s time to leave typical cinema-going for the kids and head to Films At The Fort for some date night fun, mama!
