For the fourth year running, help us say a big THANK YOU to the helpers who support our families, and mark your diaries for 1 June
Since 2016, Sassy Mama – and you, our fabulous readers – have come together to celebrate and say thank you to helpers. Whether through awards or just a big old party, the annual event has become a major highlight on our yearly calendar. This year we’re going bigger than ever: May 2019 will be Helper Appreciation Month!
This idea comes to us from Hong Kong, where in 2015 resident Steve Chitty proposed a full month of helper appreciation and awareness, with May as the natural choice given it includes Labour Day, Mother’s Day, and the International Day of Families. As Steve told us:
“Helper Appreciation Month takes the emphasis off one day, or a singular event, and encourages us all to stretch out our gratitude. At the end of the day most employers are deeply grateful for the impact their helper has on their lives, and they are also mindful that domestic workers have made massive sacrifices to support their own families.”
Taking this wisdom to heart, throughout the month of May we will have four themed weeks offering special activities and free or discounted services just for helpers. As ever, we’ll also feature lots of thought-provoking articles about, by and for domestic helpers. Here’s some of what you can look forward to each week; make sure to check back every Friday for that week’s list of limited-time offers and deals from our sponsors (as we’re adding new perks and features all the time!):
During this week Sassy Mama will promote health checkups and mammogram screenings for Foreign Domestic Workers in collaboration with Complete Healthcare International (CHI) and Raffles Hospital. Other organisations participating in Healthcare Week include The Iron Suites, who will be offering discounted iron tests; a Wellness Workshop from HelpHer Do Better; and vision checks with Ngee Ann Polytechnic Optometry Centre.
Sassy Mama spoke with helpers directly to get their insights on how to make them feel appreciated. Together with the Singapore Kindness Movement, KC Dat, Jones the Grocer, The Nail Social, Cotton On and Starhub we’ll have lots of tips and goodies to show our gratitude and brighten helpers’ days.
Our longstanding collaboration with organisations that give amazing support to Foreign Domestic Workers – Aidha and HOME – has been instrumental in bringing our popular initiative to where it is today.
For Education Week, Sassy Mama has collaborated with Aidha, HOME, FAST and Uplifters to provide free and discounted courses aimed at upskilling helpers, as education and financial literacy are key to helping them break the cycle of poverty and improve their families’ financial standing. We are also pleased to announce some great baby and childcare courses provided by Beauty Mums & Babies and The Bright Life during this jam-packed Education Week.
Sassy Mama has handpicked unique activities where helpers can get active, make friends, and have fun, including a yoga session with HelpHer Do Better; free fitness sessions in partnership with Free Spirits; and a Singapore Photography Walk conducted by Foreign Domestic Worker and award-winning photographer, Mayrhose Coronado. The acclaimed Wild Rice Theatre Company is also offering free theatre tickets!
Mark your calendars for our Helper Celebration Party on 1 June
To cap it all off, we’ll be hosting our ever popular (and FREE!) Helper Celebration Party on Saturday 1 June at Australian International School. We’ll have entertainment for helpers – including live music by Chris & Diana and the Numama Choir, and dance classes and performances from Dance Embassy and Rhythm in Me. Helpers can feel pampered with makeovers from professional makeup artists Powderwowder, Jennifer G Chua MUA and Suha Haris, along with gorgeous nail wraps from Nodspark. And of course our popular goodie bags will be back and better than ever thanks to generous sponsors KC Dat, Maids ‘R’ Us and LUSH. Kiddos will be well looked after with heaps of fun activities from Party Mojo, Camp Magic, and Little Artists. As ever, it looks to be a super fun and celebratory afternoon for the whole family.
Space is limited so be sure to RSVP pronto, mamas. We also encourage you to send in photos of your helper with your kids (or pets) together with a few sentences on why your family appreciates her. These will be displayed on the big projection screen throughout the event; email firstname.lastname@example.org with your submission!
