A solid foundation in the arts is essential to a child’s holistic growth and development. One international school takes this to heart and truly encourages every student’s artistic talents with its innovative arts programme.

“Every child is born an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” That quote is widely attributed to Pablo Picasso, and at GEMS World Academy (Singapore), they’re doing everything they can to encourage creativity in students as they grow and learn through their innovative arts programme!

For instance, GWA recently kicked off the new school year with a collaborative, mixed media art project to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. The SG50 Arts Project involved students across multiple grades, with each creating a set of tiles to reflect their perception of Singapore.

From gorgeous tissue paper orchids, to a stunningly geometric reconstruction of the Singapore skyline, from noodles made of yarn to a 3D tile of the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, students were encouraged to workshop their designs from the idea stage to execution, resulting in an incredibly diverse, artistic celebration of Singapore. We don’t think it’s much of a stretch to call these kids mini Picassos, actually!

Besides this special all-school arts project, holistic learning opportunities abound at GWA. Have you heard about their creative music programme, mama? Starting in the Early Years, little ones receive guided music learning provided by a specialist teacher, multiple times a week!

Every student in grades 1-5 is provided with either a violin or a cello – a pioneering programme here in Singapore! GWA believes that every child is able to not only play, but enjoy music, and they encourage that love and passion not only through hands-on instruction, but by teaching them how to read music, through singing, through dancing, and all sorts of other fun and games.

Once students reach secondary school they have the option to develop their musical skills further; in fact every GWA student has the opportunity to take 1-to-1 music lessons during the school day in the soundproof studios within GWA’s Symphony Hall area. There are also multiple orchestra groups and bands offered through the school’s extensive slate of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs).

So you see, mama, there’s no reason your child can’t hang onto their creativity and remain an artist for life. In fact, that’s completely encouraged at GEMS World Academy (Singapore), where every student has the opportunity to explore their creative abilities and excel!
