The abortion process in Singapore

The first thing to do when seeking an abortion in Singapore is to go to a general practitioner (GP), polyclinic or gynaecologist. After an initial consultation, women seeking an abortion will have to go through mandatory pre-abortion counselling. There is a mandatory waiting period of 48 hours after the counselling session, before the abortion can be conducted.

Pre-abortion counselling for girls below 16 years of age is mandatory (except for rape victims) and will have to be conducted at the Health Promotion Board Counselling Centre, after which they will be issued a Certificate of Attendance (COA), which is necessary for performing the abortion. Parental consent is not legally required for minors seeking an abortion.

Abortion pills in Singapore

The main abortion pill administered in Singapore is Misoprostol. The Misoprostol abortion pill is used for medical abortions of less than 8 weeks. A medical abortion is done by taking an abortion pill like Misoprostol orally or inserting into the vagina, causing the uterus to contract, resulting in bleeding from the womb which increases progressively. Pregnancy tissue is then expelled from the womb and is similar to a heavy menstrual period. An abortion pill may take up to 72 hours to take effect.

Cost of abortion in Singapore

An abortion in Singapore can cost from $800 to $5,000, depending on whether the procedure is conducted in a public hospital, a private hospital, or a private clinic. Singaporean patients can use their MediSave accounts to subsidise the procedure.

Public hospitals that perform abortions

KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and National University Hospital (NUH) are all able to perform surgical abortions. You can get a referral from a polyclinic or GP for an abortion in a public hospital.
