Forget about mean witches, sometimes dealing with a pesky little brother can be really scary! A new children’s play at SRT takes a fresh look at sibling rivalry and family unity

Chances are you’re familiar with the classic Grimms’ fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, mama, in which a brother and sister band together against a wicked stepmother and evil witch, leaving trails of breadcrumbs and outsmarting their way from a scary oven. Any mama of two kids or more has probably read it and asked, Really, these kids never once fought?!

Sibling rivalry is a fact of family life, so it only makes sense that even famous fairy tale siblings would have their share of squabbles. The Little Company has put a twist on the classic tale with their new production, Gretel and Hansel, which’ll be running from 13 March through 19 April at KC Arts Centre.

In this reimagined version, jealous older sister Gretel and her attention-grabbing little bro Hansel also take a momentous journey through the forest, along the way learning to set aside their differences and work together in the name of family unity. Parents and children alike can watch and relate to the sibling dynamics between Gretel and Hansel, and hopefully pick up some helpful and constructive strategies along the way! The show is perfect for children ages 4 and up.

SRT’s The Little Company productions are some of our very favourite kids’ theatre shows in Singapore – we love how they combine originality with catchy songs, topnotch production values, and inventive sets and scenery. Not to mention performances always happen at kid-friendly times (11am or 2pm), and because of their fab location at Robertson Quay we can always go out for yummy lunch afterwards. Tickets are now on sale — look for us cheering in the front row come March, mama!
