#BuySingLit returns in March 2019 bigger and better than ever, with more than 80 events spread across two weekends, including puppet shows, kids’ theatre, storytelling and more!

Just in case you needed a reminder, mama, reading to your child is the greatest gift you could give them, better than any toy, enrichment class, or fancy holiday.

#buysinglit festival 2019 celebrates local books and authors and literature in general
Reading aloud to kids has myriad benefits

The benefits – from bonding, to language acquisition, to teaching empathy and emotion – are myriad from almost the moment they’re born. And with a world-class local library system (and an outstanding network of special children’s libraries!), families in Singapore can read the world for free!

The annual #BuySingLit movement, which aims to promote Singaporean authors and literature, returns for its third installment from 8-17 March 2019, and will feature over 80 programmes spanning 50 venues across two weekends.

As ever, there’ll be heaps of family- and kid-friendly activities many of them free! – including storytelling, sketching, poetry writing and much more! We love that events will be happening in Chinese, Malay and Tamil in addition to English, in a true expression of #BuySingLit’s commitment to local cultures and literary traditions.

For instance, on 9 March kiddos can look forward to The Legend of Bukit Merah, an intergenerational theatre production featuring both seniors and kindergarten children as they explore the local legend of Bukit Merah on stage under the expert direction of director Jeffrey Tan.

On 16 March there’ll be bilingual Malay storytelling as local legends are brought to life, meanwhile at Bollywood Veggies kiddos can enjoy writing Chinese poetry along with interactive storytelling and nature sketching.

Throughout you can look forward to fun activities like puppet shows, model house-building, and pancake-making. And #BuySingLit will even extend for a bonus weekend (20-24 March) in collaboration with Arts in Your Neighbourhood in Toa Payoh. Here you’ll be able to meet homegrown authors, listen to stories in mother tongues and English, and discover a wide selection of children’s SingLit books, perfect for ages 4 to 12. You can even show off your SingLit knowledge during the special Quiz for your chance to win prizes!
