Flex your back-to-school style with our top picks!
There’s nothing quite like going back to school with new gear on your feet and sparkly clips in your hair! Now that you’ve hunted down the coolest, most affordable school supplies, it’s time to hit the shops for some shoe, sock and hat shopping to start the new school year in style. Don’t forget to head down to your fave barber to get that hair looking neat, too!
While Bata has really been making a name for itself among the stylish adult crowd as of late (they just wrapped up Bata Fashion Weekend in Milan this May), we still know them for providing classic school sneakers to kids all over Singapore since the 1930s! Prices start at just $22.95, with comfortable, functional styles in classic white and all black.
You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of Converse! Not only are they great for school, but these sneakers can even be worn on afternoons out with mama and dad because they’re so versatile. Chuck Taylors are our pick for a fuss-free school shoe.
Specialising in children’s shoes since the 1940s, this high-quality American brand makes sturdy, adjustable shoes for babies, preschoolers and kids. We love all their fun colours, but they do put out solid white and black pairs to match school uniforms, too. Right now it’s looking like they’ve got some good sales going on their website, too!
Ten Feet Tall
How much do we LOVE Ten Feet Tall?! With the only proper measuring and fitting service in town (they work in consultation with a podiatrist), Ten Feet Tall launched in 2016 in Holland Village and has been going gangbusters ever since. Founded by two mamas who were frustrated with the lack of properly-fitting school shoes in Singers, Ten Feet Tall’s got a fantastic range of smart black school shoes for boys and girls aged 3-18, carrying 25 styles across three leading European brands – Start-Rite, Ricosta and Petasi. Prices are totally reasonable, too! AND they recently became an Asics Kids retailer, so you can even nab kiddo some properly fitting sneakers at the same time. Best of all, for every old pair of school shoes you bring in when you pick up new shoes, Ten Feet Tall will donate them to their School Shoe Bank for needy kids across Asia!
Psst! We hear Ten Feet Tall will be popping up at various international schools throughout July and August. Check out their Facebook page for all the deets, mama!
If you’ve got kids with a knack for skating/scootering, you might have heard them gushing once or twice over Vans sneakers. We don’t blame them, though – these shoes are actually really comfortable, and we love how they have slip-on styles that do away with laces (no more rushing in the morning to get shoes tied!). Unless your kids graze their shoes on the pavement from skating, you’ll be glad to know that Vans sneakers can last for years without holes in them despite daily wear!
If your kiddo’s too cool for school, CottonOn Kids is where you’ll find stylish threads and socks that’ll help them express their colourful personality! You’ll find loads of cool printed socks for less.
Socks are one of those things that seem to always go missing no matter how many you buy, so getting a few pairs at ‘wholesale’ price is usually the way to go. Giant offers a variety of sock styles at super low prices and there’s tons to choose from – high cut, low cut, thin, thick, ribbed, seamless, you name it!
Looking for good quality socks for your littlest littlies? Prep them for Playgroup with Mothercare’s insanely cute collection of socks, which are all available in sets of three, four or five for more print options! Check out these quirky Multicoloured Monster Socks or these ones in Nautical prints!
Keep your little one’s head and face out of the sun on the way to school with sun hats in pretty pastels and cute prints! We’ve got our eyes on the colourful range from LÄSSIG and these animal-themed ones from Coq en Pâte (which also has matching backpacks!) that you can find at Motherswork. You can also check out Ocean Paradise for cute hats and other swim gear (for your next holiday, or swim class!), plus mama can do a spot of shopping too! Sports stores like REI.com and Decathalon are also good spots, and you might even discover great finds at Queensway Shopping Centre.
Hair clips, hair ties, head bands… While tying your kiddo’s hair may not sound like the most exciting thing to do during the morning rush, you might want to check out Cute Girls Hairstyles for some inspo. The YouTube channel has over 5 million subscribers and the hairstyles featured are so cute you won’t be able to resist trying them out on your little ones!
If you’d rather go the easy way out with a simple ponytail or pigtail braids, dress it up a little with cute clips (OMG these sequin and unicorn ones from Seed Heritage, sahhh cute!) or a headband like this one from Kids21. Pop by H&M’s kids section for a wide variety, or Lovisa for cool accessories for older girls.
Bub needs a fresh cut before school starts? We love that EC House Kids’ Corner has eight locations across the island (check their website to see exactly how many “kiddy rides” are available at each spot); this ultra-efficient hair cuttery is perfectly geared toward squirmy young’uns with quick haircuts. Best of all, they come at just 10 bucks a pop! Curly & Spike is another mama fave, with its totally stylish kids-only salon in River Valley that allows wriggly tots to watch a movie or play a video game to keep distracted!
