Celebrate Singapore’s multicultural heritage with a Chinese orchestra kids’ concert incorporating Indian and Malay musical traditions
Get ready to celebrate that old kampong spirit with the kiddos, mama: Singapore Chinese Orchestra will present the fifth and final instalment of its popular ‘Voyage to Nanyang’ young person’s concert series – Balik Kampong – on 9 and 10 November!
Presented in Mandarin with English surtitles, the concert will share the essence of music from each of Singapore’s three main cultures – Chinese, Malay and Indian – at once highlighting their unique characteristics while also showing how well the three races can live and play together. It’s a wonderful metaphor for Singapore’s own racial harmony.
Conducted by SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong (portraying the role of Ah De), th concert will feature guests including musician Raghavendran Rajasekaran playing the venu alongside Tan Chye Tiong on the dizi on a rearrangement of the Indian classic Bho Shambo. Then, Malay musician Ismahairie Putra will play the gambus while SCO musician Zhang Yin plays the pipa to a Malay-Chinese interpretation of Wang Chenwei’s Pelayaran.
The concert will give young attendees an idea of what it was like to live in the shared culture of a kampong during Singapore’s early days. It will also showcase Singapore’s wondrously rapid development from kampongs to a modern, developed “Lion City”. To further bolster this communal vibe there will be pre-concert activities and old school games like hopscotch, five stones, chapteh, goli (marbles), and pick up sticks. These fun, kid-friendly activities will all start an hour before the two shows on 10 November, and are exclusively limited to ticket holders.
Geared toward children aged 7 and up, Balik Kampong looks to be a wonderful time for the whole family – perhaps grandparents can come along to relate tales of their own experiences with kampong life! – and a fitting close to the ‘Voyage to Nanyang’ series that has celebrated Singapore’s multicultural heritage and history. Don’t miss it, mama!
