Blonde mama Mary discovers a miracle worker in stylist Thomas Goh at Kimage Salon…it’s all about the balayage, mama!

Popping into Kimage Prestige at I12 Katong to make an appointment, I was greeted by Principal Stylist Thomas Goh, who was kind enough not to comment adversely on the state of my over-processed, frankly yellow mop of hair.

He explained that each balayage treatment is created to suit the individual in terms of the colours used to match skin tone, hair type and to achieve a natural, sun-kissed result.

On the day of the appointment, he was very informative and explained clearly that the freehand (no foils) colouring technique is not only customised, but also adds depth and dimension to your hair colour and makes you look younger!

I admit, he had his work cut out as my previous stylist (at a well-known London salon) had gone way overboard with the bleach, leaving me with a headful of straight, foil produced grid lines. In his expert hands, Thomas transformed this into a very attractive blend of tones, which was then super hydrated to finish off the process.

My Kimage experience also included one of the best head massages I have ever experienced at a salon, lying blissfully horizontal in a darkened area of the salon.

The last part of the experience was a discussion about my hair ‘style’ during which Thomas managed to update my look and suggest longer-term plans to suit a busy lifestyle that does not include much skill with blow-drying.

For busy Sassy Mamas, this is all about putting in the time and letting someone else make the effort to achieve a long-term, low maintenance look that will last for months if cared for properly.

Hair tip 1: If you are in and out of the pool with the kids, wet your hair first in the shower (so it soaks up non-chlorinated water), then apply leave in conditioner to protect the colour.

Hair tip 2: Even though it seems there is never enough time, conditioner is essential every time you wash your hair: It’s something to do with neutralizing the alkaline in the shampoo apparently.

By this stage I wasn’t really paying attention, as I was too relaxed and totally smitten with my new glossy locks.
