Flip Flop Upgrade: Ditch the rubber and pop your feet into something more stylish mama!

Style & BeautyPost Category - Style & BeautyStyle & Beauty - Post Category - Style For YouStyle For You

I must confess mamas — I have a seriously unhealthy (and somewhat unstylish) relationship with my casual flip flops. These rubber beauties have gone from playground play date, to splash sessions by the pool, to many a hurried shopping expedition to the local supermarket, all without complaint. I even have them in a multitude of colours to match with everything in my closet, proving that I’m in serious shoe trouble.

While living in Hong Kong I managed to keep this relationship in check but since moving to Singapore, where it’s a feet out all year round kind of place, I’ve found myself adopting a much more laissez faire attitude towards my shoes. But now enough is enough! Here are my favourite chic alternatives to the casual flip flop.

TKEES — sandals that “disappear” on your feet

My latest obsession are TKEES, designed by husband and wife team Jesse and Carley Burnett. I love that they are perfect for dressing up a really casual outfit but can also be worn to a mid-week dinner paired with a simple summer dress.  These leather lovelies (with super comfy rubber soles) come in colour categories that range from totally nude – my faves — to summer brights and prints so you can match them to anything. Plus they’re a steal at only $50 on Shopbop (the icing on the cake is the speedy Gonzalez delivery to Singapore – they’ll be on your tootsies in 3 days flat!).

George Blue – luxury Riviera chic

Ocean Python

If you’re looking for luxury in the footwear department then look no further than George Blue. These understated, chic sandals are made with fine Italian leathers and exotic skins using traditional craftsmanship methods. Founder and designer Rebecca Walters lives in Singapore so if you’re undecided about a colour or print you can arrange an appointment to see them in the flesh. The company operates with a conscience too and minimises its eco-footprint by using sustainable packaging materials and keeping production concentrated within Tuscany. And if that’s not quite enough mama, $5 from every pair bought is donated to Maloto, a charity working to “Feed – Educate – Empower” women and children in Malawi. While they may not be super cheap — prices start at $295 — they are worth every penny to get your feet enclosed in some quality threads.

Birkenstocks – fabulously fashionable again

madrid birks

Don’t laugh mamas! While many of us associate Birkenstocks with hippies, these somewhat daggy treads have had a recent fashion revival! And with most of us running around after little ones all day, I think it’s a trend that offers loads on the comfort front – even if the style is rather lacking. Their signature suede covered moulded cork footbed offers much needed arch support to aching feet and shock absorption for when you’re racing around town all day. They even carry a “pool slider” design that is all over the runways this season. My top pick definitely has to be The Madrid – it comes in a number of colours and is available online for $94… not too bad at all.

Sam Edelman – the iconic looks great with everything sandal

sam edelman

Sam Edelman knows sandals and the Gigi is, hands down, the essential summer sandal – I love slipping my feet into these and I know you will too! The minimalist T Strap design is super flattering and will fast become you new summer staple – it pretty much goes with anything your wardrobe could throw at it. Made from leather and available in a multitude of colours, get yours online for $82.

Yes, it is entirely possible to play matchy matchy with your little girls with a pair of cosy Saltwater Sandals – one of our very own Sassy Mamas couldn’t stop raving about them! Made from super soft leather and available in a wide range of colours, I love that these beauties provide much needed support for tired feet without compromising on quality or style… and all without breaking the bank either ($85 for basic colour, $89 for metallic).
