After getting my wrist slapped by our pediatrician recently for letting my daughters ruin their arches by slobbing around in flip-flops, I cast around for a cute alternative to the ever-present Crocs and mini Havaianas (though both will probably always have a place in our household!). While we were scouting for goodies to include in our Sassy Mama style guide (more on that coming soon!) we wandered over to Soon Lee in Haji Lane and stumbled across the holy grail of kids’ footwear – Saltwater Sandals. Unfortunately, this is one for the girls only, but I was totally sold on the idea of being able to match with my littlies!
Saltwater sandals are made from leather, with a good ankle support strap and are also a little smidge wider than regular sandals, so great for chubby little feet. They’re waterproof and salt-proof, so they claim you can wear them on the beach and in the sea (but personally I would rather not risk that!). Best of all for me is the number of colours they come in – our editor Sarah bagged a silver pair, while I picked out a red pair and a gold pair for my daughters. After a couple of months of pretty hard wear, they are still looking fab! I did get a couple of complaints from my girls about the ankle strap as they just weren’t used to the sensation of their ankles being more supported, but once I had checked they weren’t rubbing, they started to love them.
On mamas, they work well with skinny jeans, shorts or floaty floral dresses – just about everything strangely! And they’re in keeping with the summer trend for slightly heavier flat shoes (Birks are having a resurgence too!). As they’re affordable too and you get a good amount of wear out of them, they’re the latest object of our Sassy Mama lust!
Saltwater Sandals range from $59 – $64 for the basic colours for kids and $65 – $69 for metallic shades. For adults they are $85 for the basic colours and $89 for metallic.
