The stage musical Aladdin premiered this week at Marina Bay Sands and tickets are flying off like magic carpets! This enchanted mama shares her review

Twenty-four hours on and I’m still tapping my toes and humming the “Prince Ali” song, plus I’m not sure my eyes have quite recovered from the sparkling costumes that span, tapped, twirled and flew across the stage. If you are one of the few who hasn’t seen the movie version of Aladdin (my Dad can be counted as one of these, he came with me and loved it), the stage production, currently on at Marina Bay Sands, is still for you!

“Never had a friend like me” is a show-stopping number in the Aladdin musical

Disney’s Aladdin was released in 1992 (!) and has remained a firm favourite since then. This theatrical production has some obvious changes to the movie to make it more of a stage production; for instance, the parrot of the evil Jafar is played by an actor as his sidekick. Abu, Aladdin’s cheeky monkey, suffered the same fate and was replaced with three friends to guide him through the mischief and adventures. There are original songs that weren’t in the movie, but of course the best known songs are still there. Each scene is vibrant, with spectacular scenic design, magic tricks, pyrotechnics and special effects.

Here’s how utterly spectacular the show is: it features 337 glittering costumes (covered in almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals!), along with 40 tonnes of scenery and 60 tonnes of automation staging to recreate the fantastical city of Agrabah, the Sultan’s Palace, and the Cave of Wonders.

Gareth Jacobs steals the show as Genie in the Aladdin musical

Highlights for me were “The Cave of Wonders,” which was a feast for my eyes. Congratulations to the stage design team who came up with that, it was breathtaking. The Genie, played by Gareth Jacobs, steals the show and rouses the audience with his humour and flair.

And during the famous magic carpet ride, when Princess Jasmine and Aladdin float off into the stars, the audience last night actually cheered – that’s how enraptured everyone was.

Grab your tickets now, mamas, you will not be disappointed. We are still talking about it and my Dad has even expressed an interest to watch the Disney original!
