Ever wondered what it’s like to run without being able to see, mama? Runninghour 2017 invites you to experience it for a good cause

Following Meryl Streep’s moving acceptance speech at the Golden Globes just days ago addressing the United States president-elect’s unfavourable act of mocking a disabled Hollywood reporter, there is no better time to discuss inclusion of people with special needs in our community. While our government strives to open doors for the disabled, from making education for special needs children compulsory, to introducing an Act that protects disabled and infirm adults from abuse, we can hope to make a difference by spending just one afternoon in their shoes.

Returning for its third edition on Saturday, 13 May 2017, Runninghour 2017 welcomes the public to try running ‘blind’ to experience the challenges of impairment first-hand. First of its kind, Runninghour: Run So Others Can is Singapore’s only mass running event that allows participants to run alongside and be guided by visually, intellectually and physically-challenged runners. Held annually since 2015, the event aims to integrate people with special needs into the mainstream community through sports.

Continuing the tradition, Runninghour will offer complimentary slots to special needs participants. This tradition has enabled a huge increase in the number of special needs participants year-on-year, from just 200 participants in 2015 to almost 400 in 2016.

On top of the three non-competitive run categories this installation – 3.5km, 5km and 10km – Runninghour will also be conducting free integration workshops titled Sole Mates, to raise awareness for guiding people with special needs to participate in mainstream sports activities.

Registration is now open for adults and kiddos 6 years and up, so why not take your little ones along to run for a good cause? We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off getting into shape for the new year. Run, so others can, mama!
