There’s nothing quite like a relaxing beach holiday… gazing out over an azure blue sea, whitewashed stones, warm summer breezes, Singapore in the background…hang on! Singapore in the background? Why yes it is!

Just a hop, skip and a 30-minute ferry ride from Singapore (if you really want to travel in style, feel free to charter the private yacht) the beautiful Montigo Resort on Batam Island is one of Indonesia’s most stylish holiday destinations – and is perfect for a quick weekend getaway with the fam!

Sprawling across 12 hectares on Batam’s north east shore, Montigo offers a welcoming and relaxing environment for families – from the trendy 2-bedroom, 3-storey villas, to the fully supervised kids’ club and even the resort’s mascot, Tilo the oversized chicken, families are well catered for at this stunning resort.

Montigo - Living Room 02

In our contemporary villa, we had a blissful time soaking in the oversized bath with its luxurious Malin + Goetz bath products. The main bedroom, with its 4-poster bed (plus a large daybed!) had fabulous views over the South China Sea, whilst the twin-bedded “kids” room had its own tv and en-suite bathroom – perfect for those with teens who prefer to do their own thing!

Villas come fully quipped with a kitchenette and large lounge that leads out onto the terrace, complete with private plunge pool – ideal for beating the heat and letting your wee ones splash in the pool without disturbing other guests.

The upstairs terrace was where we felt truly at home (and much like we were in Greece!). From the white cushioned benches to the footstools and even the silver-tray coffee tables, there’s an air of elegance here that made this mama very happy indeed. You can even request your own private BBQ function in this minimalistic space, where the team will take care of everything for you – all you need to do is kick back, relax and enjoy the company of your beloved, while the kids are tucked up asleep downstairs.

As for the food at Montigo, cooking instructors are on hand to help whip up exotic-sounding Indonesian dishes, such as Ayam Panggan Berempah and Perkedel Jagung – fun! The menu at the resort’s main restaurant, TADD, features delicious Indonesian and Western favourites and includes an extensive children’s menu, as well as crayons and colouring paper de rigeur. If you prefer a modern take on Chinese and Indonesian cuisine, then head to the resort’s Pantai Restaurant or if you just want to chill-out sans kids, then Tiigo Beach Club is where you’ll want to be mamas. It’s an adults-only club complete with daybeds, cocktails and even a DJ on Saturday nights!

For families, the OLO Kids’ Club is where the kids fun is really at. From the bright canary-yellow slide that dives your kiddos into a ball pit, to the paddling pool with water sprays, to the toys, the individual tv lounges with Wii stations and a massive selection of movies, Montigo truly understands how to look after children (and their parents!). The staff can even organise a range of activities like treasure hunts, kite flying, gardening and they even have a handy babysitting service too if you’d prefer to have a meal without the kiddos.

The biggest attraction for this mama however, was the resort’s spa. Housed in individual antique huts (transported from Java no less!), mamas can enjoy a Javanese Lular massage and scrub (an Indonesian massage and Javanese scrub that uses only fresh ingredients like turmeric, candle nut and jasmine) or the signature Montigo ritual that includes a scrub, wrap, facial and massage. If all that isn’t enough to send you into pure relaxation, you can always take advantage of the Jacuzzi and completely bliss out while listening to the waves of the South China Sea in the background.

For the more active (not me!) Nongsa also has 6 championship golf courses, tennis courts, water sports, a gym and yoga classes, but if active sports aren’t your ideal way to spend your break, it’s best to spend your time in the resort itself, as there isn’t much surrounding it.

For a long weekend with the kiddies (or even just the one night if that is all you can swing!) Montigo Resort is the perfect quick escape from Singapore. This luxurious yet extremely family-friendly resort will leave you refreshed and recharged and all without the hassle of jetlag, airplanes and a long journey!
