Sports aren’t just good for grown-ups and older kids; there are plenty of benefits for littlies, too. Here’s why sports are part of the curriculum at Shaws Preschool – the very preschool that Singaporean Olympic Athlete Shanti Pereira went to!

There are plenty of play-based preschools in Singapore, but one stands out for the way it incorporates sports into its curriculum: for more than 30 years, Shaws Preschool has been educating happy, active kids. In fact, sports are fully incorporated twice a week, right from the start at 18 months all the way up through Kindergarten 2!

Shaws believes big-time in learning through play, and what’s more fun to play than sports?! Twice a week, kiddos try their hand at a wide variety of sports, including soccer, tennis, rugby, softball, golf, volleyball and athletics, just to name a few! This is all under the tutelage of the trained coaches from Shaws Little League, one of Singapore’s most popular sport enrichment programmes for kids.

The Benefits of Playing Sports

The Preschool Where Sport is Part of the Curriculum

From the very beginning (like, practically newborn stage), getting kids moving can encourage the development of fine and gross motor skills. These play into brain function, and studies have shown that active children actually learn and absorb more information than those who are sedentary.

Sports also teach kids about grit and resilience; sometimes we might not win, or we might fall down, but there’s so much to be learned from picking ourselves up, dusting ourselves off, and trying again! Along the same lines, children discover the joys of teamwork and coming together to accomplish a common goal.

On top of all that, it’s just really fun getting to try new things! Who knows, your kiddo might discover a particular aptitude for tennis or soccer, and you may have the next Serena Williams or Shanti Pereira (a Shaws Alumni) on your hands!

Every child at Shaws does sports, but even within age groups there are different skill levels to ensure everyone receives proper coaching and can proceed at their own pace. We are so jealous!

If you’re keen to find out more, why not visit one of 5 Shaws campuses across Singapore? There’s no downside to getting your child moving!
