What does a day look like for a child at a preschool with a ‘music-infused curriculum’?
Kinderland Preschool & Infant Care’s programme is rather unique thanks to its music-infused curriculum – but what exactly do kids get up to? Little ones get to experience the unique Children’s Music Programme, KinderFit Cardio-fitness, Literacy through I.T., S.T.R.E.A.M. and Character Development. Here’s a little taster of some of the activities children may experience over the course of their school year depending on their age:
Morning
Breakfast: Tots start off the day with a nutritious breakfast prepared by the in-house cook in the delicious on-site kitchen. The healthy menu is designed by an in-house certified Food Nutritionist to ensure healthy growth. All Kinderland menus are planned in line with the Healthy Meals in Pre-schools Programme by the Health Promotion Board to ensure children absorb the right amount of nutrients at different developmental stages.
Children’s Music Programme: Little ones aged 2 and 3 years old (Pre-Nursery) at Kinderland spend the morning singing, having fun with rhymes, and dancing (rhythmic movement) gearing up their sense of rhythm and memory for upper level learning. Older kids 4 to 6 years old (Nursery and Kindergarten levels) get to build on this early foundation progressively in music. In addition, they learn to play actual musical instruments such as the pianica, electone, drums, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiels and more! This is a weekly lesson that helps develop their listening, memory, social and notation reading skills. Instrument musical training develops the part of the brain that controls visual-spatial skills, vital for learning maths and science, while sharpening memory and improving verbal intelligence and literacy. The programme reinforces brain development and provides a booster for children’s rapid brain growth in the first five years of their lives.
Indoor or Outdoor experiential learning: When it’s not too hot the kids get to explore the outdoors (at selected centres) or indoors in the specially designed learning areas. Outdoor learning experiences are often set up to excite kids to investigate and learn more about co-living with the natural environment. This forms a part of Kinderland’s Character Development programme which nurtures the caring Kinderland child to be curious, socially responsible, mindful, and have a growth mindset. Children would learn to live sustainably through the educators’ guidance in the outdoors. At the same time, experiential learning teaches the little ones to contribute to society through meaningful ways such as caring for the needy, moulding them as global citizens with a heart.
Lunch
The kids have had a busy morning and will be hungry for a hearty meal! Trained cooks prepare tasty fare from noodles and fresh veg to rice with chicken as well as the ever popular pasta. Kids love mealtimes at Kinderland – little ones are encouraged to feed themselves so that they sharpen their fine motor skills and become more independent. Older children learn to self-serve and clean up after they are done to encourage self-help skills and independence. Second servings are always the norm with these little diners!
Afternoon
Literacy through I.T: Preschoolers start to hone their language and literacy through a special multi-sensory programme designed to empower children to write even before learning to read. The primary objective is to drive their interest in conveying their thoughts in words and expanding their creativity. Children are encouraged to express their ideas freely using sound association, without needing to observe the rules of grammar. Improvements are introduced later to reinforce their learning. The I.T. room is fitted with an assortment of I.T. gadgets and other digital-reliant programmes to inspire kids and facilitate their learning.
S.T.R.E.A.M: This stands for Science, Technology, Reading & wRiting, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics. Preschoolers take on inquiry-based project work and sub-consciously learn these subjects. Adding fun elements into academic components, the exposure gives children the opportunity to think, plan, communicate and break down a big project into sizable tasks whilst enhancing social skills and building resilience and confidence as they overcome issues during the course work.
KinderFit Cardio-fitness: Staying active is so important for kids’ mental wellness and their physical development. KinderFit is a uniquely- designed physical activity programme for kids to get active – this fitness cum cardio wellness programme incorporates games and exercises to develop kids’ confidence and ability to control their body movements. With KinderFit, children get 50% more physical activity than most of their peers.
