It’s 7:30 on a Friday night, and I’m at a gorgeous outdoor spot by the Fullerton Bay Hotel, overlooking Marina Bay. The crowd around me is decked out in their finest threads, and the tunes are pumping – I can barely hear myself think over a remix of Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart” (not that I’m complaining, that song is a total classic).
I’m not here to get my drink on, though – instead I’m kicking off the weekend with the inaugural Armour@TheBay x 7Cycle Outdoor Night Ride, a bi-monthly, free-to-participate spinning class presented in collaboration between athletic apparel powerhouse Under Armour and uber-hip boutique spinning studio 7Cycle (those fine threads I mentioned would be Under Armour’s legendary HeatGear shirts – a godsend for anyone who exercises outside in Singapore).
The Outdoor Night Ride was created to “ignite 2015 for individuals who are determined to meet and complete their fitness resolutions and goals for the New Year”, according to Michael Binger of Under Armour Southeast Asia. A variety of classes are on offer, including spinning and a 35-minute H.I.I.T. (High-Intensity Interval Training) session.
7Cycle is all about celebrating the “transformative power of fitness and community”, and aims to make every class feel a bit like a dance party. The electric atmosphere overlooking Marina Bay Sands – as the after-work crowds gathered at nearby bars and tourists stopped by to check out the commotion – was infectiously fun, particularly as the two goofy 7Cycle instructors bantered and intermittently hopped off their bikes to dance among those of us slogging our way up imaginary hills.
Best of all, though, was that it really did feel like a party celebrating Singapore. Who wouldn’t be inspired to look out over the towers of Marina Bay Sands, particularly once the evening light show kicks off? Even better, we were treated to a gorgeous breeze off the water, making for a much cooler (literally!) atmosphere than I’ve ever experienced in any dark spin studio.
Going forward, sessions will take place every other Tuesday at 6:30pm at Clifford Square next to the Fullerton Bay Hotel; the next session will be on Tuesday, 3 February. Look for a variety of workouts to try, including the “Signature 7Cycle” spinning session incorporating hand weights and choreography, “7Cycle Road” (rhythm-based rides set to music), and “7Cycle Bootcamp” (circuit training combining cardio intervals on the bike with body weight, functional training and plyometric exercises on the floor).
To sign up, visit Under Armour’s sparkly new store at Collyer Quay (classes are limited to 20-30 people, mama!), and watch their Facebook page for event updates. Stay fit, mamas!
