Am I allowed to put ‘Nursed for two years’ on my resume? It’s a full-time job really. The hours are long and erratic, the client is extremely demanding and fussy. You are basically like a big story reporter on-call around the clock, not to mention that the moody client can easily have a meltdown at the drop of a hat. Oh and did I mention the client can often be gassy?⁠
This is by far the hardest job I’ve ever had. The toughest client. With zero pay.⁠
The thing about breastfeeding is that it’s such a rollercoaster and also, it’s so different for everyone, with different motivations. My sister and I are both fully formula fed babies and so I was adamant to do things differently for my kids in the hope that their immunity would be better than ours. Many moms make nursing look effortless; like, breastfeeding poster moms could literally be an ad. Good for them. Our struggling variety hate them a little bit… like how we feel about those celebrity moms who return to size 0 a mere nine weeks after giving birth.⁠
Many of us have a cow moment at least once, if not dozens of times in the first 6 months of motherhood...⁠

"With my firstborn, I was unable to breastfeed despite involving lactation consultants, ruling out tongue or lip tie, trying nipple shields, really, anything that would help make it happen. Alas it didn’t, but I became an exclusively pumping machine for 9 months, with a deep freezer full of milk to prove it. With my second, I elected to not spend my time attached to a pump, even bringing a tin of formula to the hospital when I delivered “just in case”. However, my second latched right on and 15 months later, still loves nursing at wake up and right before bed. If I’m home, he’ll feed during the day, but if I’m not, he’s content with his milk bottle. One of the reasons I elected to continue was because I had read that COVID vaccine antibodies could potentially pass through my breastmilk and offer him some protection. Although I frequently wish I had my body back all to myself, there are definitely reasons to continue if I can!" Kristen, Project Manager at Sassy Mama⁠⁠

"When was the last time you had a conversation with someone where you didn’t check your phone at least once? When was the last time you watched a whole movie without any interruption? Without looking to see what time it was or if someone texted you or to check the latest number of Covid cases for the day?⁠
It seems almost impossible to sit still these days and really enjoy something. We’re fidgety and wiggly and our minds race in a million different directions. We’re training ourselves to have short attention spans, and raising our children to do the same. Maybe all this new technology (mobile phones, social media) isn’t the best. Maybe it’s hurting our lives more than helping. I say we go back to old school ways! Turn the phones off… at least sometimes. And remove the distractions! That’s one way to move back in time a bit.⁠
Here’s another suggestion… Bring back the landline! Now before you roll your eyes and scoff at this suggestion, hear me out!"⁠

We talked about the article I wrote on @sassymamasg titled, "Kids Wearing Other Ethnicities’ Traditional Outfits: Appropriation or Appreciation?" I'll be honest, I was so nervous that I forgot to mention one important thing I noted in the article about this topic – one of the main reasons for writing this article was to urge everyone to address our own biases and assumptions we may have about people from certain races. The last thing we want is to celebrate RHD by wearing each others' cultural outfits while simultaneously having certain notions about other ethnicities, eg. painting everyone from a certain race with the same brush; lacking understanding or showing discontent for others' religious practices; or assuming someone's capabilities or level of intelligence by their race (especially in schools or at the workplace). Most will think that partaking in this uniquely Singaporean practice is innocent fun and can't possibly lead to bigger, complicated issues, but only when we confront these preconceived notions we may have, can we move forward and be a more inclusive and diverse society. Let's all strive to be more mindful and respectful, and try our best to pass on our learnings to our children so the next generation comes out even better.
