We'll be honest--as Muslim Singaporeans, hearing about the tightened restrictions just a week before Hari Raya/Eid wasn't easy. Last year, we celebrated both our kids' first Hari Raya in lockdown and it was tough, especially if you're familiar with the fact that many Malay families in Singapore usually go HARD during Hari Raya and visit at least five households a day in the first week or so (Hari Raya lasts a month here!). This year, we thought we would be able to go back to 'normal', but we're happy that we get to do house visits in groups of 5 at least. But our hearts go out to the larger families of 6, 7, 8 or more, who won't get to visit relatives together. And to the non-Singaporean mamas here who are away from your hometowns and extended families, we feel for you too. Our thoughts are also with all those oppressed or suffering all over the world during this difficult time. We hope that despite the tightened measures and the current situation, we all find the true meaning of Eid. It's a time to gather with family and friends, indulge in wholesome food, look back on good times and forgive each other for any wrongdoings in the past so we can move forward. No matter how you spend this Eid, we hope you do it with love, and that you'll be healthy in safe wherever you are. Selamat Hari Raya and Eid Mubarak, mamas ⭐🌙❤️⁠

"Even though I was happy I could support my children in their needs, there were many times I felt empty. Here I was, looking after other people’s kids. I showered them, cooked for them, played with them. I even slept with them every night. From morning until it was morning again I would be there for those kids, even later when they started going to playgroup. My employer asked me to teach them how to count, and how to spell the alphabet. I taught them with love and responsibility. But then I realised that I never had the chance to do all those things for my own kids. I missed all those precious moments." As we celebrate Mother’s Day, do remember there are many mothers in Singapore who are far from their children. "27 years ago I became a mother. I was 18 years old, back in the days before social media and parenting communities... It was a strange thing: being old enough to carry and care for a child, but still years away from being old enough to drink alcohol or go out dancing. Being old enough to pay bills and rent and have responsibility for a human being, but not being old enough to be listened to or respected as a parent. I didn’t have the life experience or maturity to demand any of it, but I sure felt entitled to it and like I had all the answers. Like most teenagers.⁠
It was hard. ⁠
It was rewarding. ⁠
It was messy, it was beautiful and it was lonely."⁠
