Tried & Tested: Afternoon Tea at the Revamped Tea Lounge, Regent Singapore

Usually a leisurely affair of dainty finger sandwiches and fragrant hot beverages, The Regent Singapore’s Tea Lounge is shaking things up with a high tea of high drama desserts

We love ourselves a spot of tea, and even more so when the accompanying nibbles come served in three tiers. Our most recent tea sojourn at The Regent was refreshingly different to many others we have tried. In fact, if you plan to introduce your little ladies to a grown up afternoon tea, then this could be the one, mamas!

First off, the Tea Lounge has been completely revamped from its previous old world charm to the current tropical chic avatar. The seats are still luxuriously plush, the serveware is lust-worthy, and there are lush plants aplenty. There is a chef’s work table (where all the dessert art takes place) and a barista’s counter so if you have young ones in tow, they might like to walk around and take in all the action.

Start with drinks: an aromatic pourover coffee (beans from Common Man Coffee Roasters) for mama and a tall and decadent iced chocolate for your little one. There are several options for tea too, all served via trolley service.

It wouldn’t be an afternoon tea without a three tier, and theirs is packed to the brim with sophisticated bites. Chef’s signature butter and mixed fruit scones served with Devonshire clotted cream, strawberry preserve and lemon curd are an afternoon tea staple. The more upscale nibbles are the lavender infused foie gras terrine tarts, delicate little open sandwiches of wagyu beef and Perigord truffles on rye, and watercress crepes with Alaskan King Crab. The tier is refillable, but we recommend you save space for the pièce de résistance.

Each guest can also order a dessert off the main menu and it is a tough, tough choice mamas! The most popular choice, The Golden Apple is a feast for the eyes and the palate. A glossy, green sugar apple (that is formed at the chef’s work table) which encases iced yuzu apple compote, yogurt espuma, hazelnut crumble and olive oil sponge. We were torn, between wanting to crack it with our spoons and keep staring at its beauty.

There is even a melon coconut milk dessert that comes with dramatic smoke and edible dry ice, and even a ubiquitous chocolate confection that looks like a field of mushrooms.

Slightly less dramatic, but still as delicious, the raspberry souffle comes with a ruby peach sorbet on a stick, the souffle itself is cloud-like and hidden within is raspberry compote, almond nougatine, and vanilla genoise. So satisfying, and not in the least bit cloying.

Instagram at the ready mamas, the new afternoon high tea at The Regent is worth experiencing now.
