Haru is a modern Izakaya just opened on Guillemard Road serving healthy Japanese/Korean rice bowls. The daytime menu sees affordable bowls of soba or multigrain rice containing superfoods like buckwheat and millet mixed with premium brown, red cargo and wild rice topped with a variety of tasty options. There’s Bulgogi ribeye ($12) with yuzu-pickled brussels sprouts, soy-dashi dressed baby corn and a soft-centered egg; Gochujang Braised Pork ($10) or for the health nuts; and Soy-marinated Tofu ($9) with kale, herbed mushrooms and roasted garlic guacamole. By night, Haru takes things up a notch with their modern interpretation of traditional Chazuke. Despite the fairly reasonable price tags ($18 to $23), bowls feature luxe ingredients like bamboo lobster in the The Lobster Chazuke ($23) – a lightly poached lobster served on either multi-grain rice or Japanese pearl rice with menma, pickled ginger, spring onions and nori, accompanied by an umami Korean tea-soup made with anchovy, kelp and infused with local premium tea blender Tea Bone Zen Mind’s Charcoal Oolong. Other chazukes include Sake-Soy Marinated Beef Rump ($21) and Mangalica Pork Chasu ($18). All of the chazuke come with complimentary Honey Jujube Tea making this an affordable healthy dinner option.

Our fave modern kebabery Fat Prince has just changed up their food and cocktail menu. Then there’s the Baharat Chicken Wings with pomegranate, hazelnut and spring onion, and the Moroccan Bouillabaisse with squid, prawn, fish and mussels in an umami broth. For desserts, go for Orange Blossom Cake with semolina, sweetened labneh and toasted pistachios, or modern Halva Pudding.
