If you live near Bukit Timah you’ll want to know about newly opened steakhouse Fat Belly.
It’s the sister brand to Sugarhaus, the cute dessert and ice cream parlour, founded by banker-turned-food entrepreneur Stanley Seow. Fat Belly is a night creature. It takes over the counter seats at the back of Sugarhaus come dinner, bringing you a very casual speakeasy-style steakhouse that offers alternate cuts of beef. Pull up a pew and sit up close to the action in the open kitchen to check on your steak being cooked in front of you.
The menu is small and neat. Choose from the tender and lean Flat Iron ($22) to the juicy well-marbled Short Rib served with chimchurri sauce and a small salad ($25), with extra sides of Guanciale Mac & Cheese, seriously amazing Cream Kale, Truffle Fries and Thyme Mushrooms, all $5.
We love local neighbourhood restaurants so this small spot is right up our alley! Plus the prices are decent and the quality is good.
For dessert, don’t miss the unusual (but it works!) Foie Gras Ice cream ($13) with brulee bananas, speculoos and roasted nuts to the pretty Jade Tart (10) with pistachio, strawberry jelly, cream and meringue.
The front of the cafe is taken up by brightly lit dessert parlour, Sugarhaus, which has had a mini revamp. They’ve introduced new flavours of ice cream and desserts from a tangy Sour Cherry, made with Italian cherries to the must-try Hibiscus Yogurt plus new cakes like the Galaxy Tart (pictured) made with a beautiful white chocolate mirror glaze and filled with chocolate mousse, raspberry jelly and chocolate crumble.
Weekends see a bouncy castle wedged in front of the cafe (up near the road) making this quite the casual family spot.
