Date Night: Fordham & Grand

Fordham & Grand on Craig Road has built their reputation as a late night supper spot, serving up cocktails and bites until the staggeringly late hour of 3am. How many mamas do you know who are regularly out that late? Well, not many that we know (we’re fond of saying that midnight is the new 3am!) but that doesn’t mean Fordham & Grand isn’t a fab place for a date night if you pop along at a more civilised hour of, say, 8pm. Tucked away behind a big wooden door, with the interior completely invisible from the street, it has a speakeasy vibe that its dark interior supports. With plain black walls, leather padded banquettes and low lighting it’s quite a romantic spot.

The menu is Western, with a nice mix of veggie options (like the Green pea risotto above!) and seafood dishes, with a few big slabs of meat for the carnivores. Prices are around what you’d expect from Duxton Hill area — not cheap (mains around $30). The big seller (for me!) is that the wine list includes 100 bottles for UNDER $100 each, but there’s also a wide variety of credible cocktails on offer too.

We started out with the Burratina with cherry tomatoes and basil pesto, and the Mushroom Soup. Both were delicious: big chunks of real mushroom in the soup, and the burratina was creamy and delicious. They lost me ever-s0-slightly on the main courses — the Scallops with sauteed cauliflower and baby leeks was served with pasta and tasted slightly of curry, a bit of a strange combo of ingredients. My husband though was thrilled with his special of Pork Chop served with pearl onions, and pronounced it delicious. We were too stuffed to consider anything other than sharing a dessert (breaking our cardinal couple rule that we don’t share food!), so we ordered the Banana Cake with salted caramel and wolfed down every bite. To be honest, if you had served me up just a dish of the caramel sauce I could have happily eaten the whole thing!

The service at Fordham & Grand is really fantastic. Attentive without being intrusive, the pace of the meal was perfect and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. With a buzzing atmosphere, great (affordable) wine and decent food, Fordham & Grand is a fab place for a date night or to hit up with a group of buddies. And if you ever see it through to closing time at 3am, we owe you a drink mama!
