A chef with a Michelin pedigree, a sweet husband-and-wife team, and absolutely delicious food…Cheek by Jowl is a date no-brainer, mama!
Cheek by Jowl on bustling Telok Ayer street is one of our favourite go-to restaurants for a girls’ dinner, quick business lunch or date night. Thanks to the delicious, inventive, vegetable-driven modern Australian cuisine and hospitable service, Cheek by Jowl ticks all the boxes.
The restaurant name Cheek by Jowl means ‘side-by-side’ and that is how the husband-and-wife team work here (we are in awe!). Chef Rishi Naleendra, formerly from Tetsuya, mans the open-plan kitchen and Manuela Toniolo, from Waku Ghin, is General Manager.
The menu has recently been jazzed up with new dishes, while old favourites like Fresh Oysters with Smoked Tomato Granita remain. Here’s our pick of the new menu, which ranges from a la carte to the Chef’s Menu (consisting of 1 snack and 5 courses at $58 during lunch, or 4 snacks and 5 courses at $88 during dinner)!
… but not as you know it. Here the crab salad comes in a delicious crab broth — sweet crab meat layered with sour cream, dotted with tarragon oil and finished with thin slices of bright orange pickled squash for tang, crunch and colour.
Don’t shy away from this exciting dish inspired by Chef’s recent rip to New York at the last seating of Michelin-starred Luksus before it closed. The cured beef here is slow cooked and sliced. Resembling pastrami with a mild smokiness, the flavours are picked up by the pickled mustard and fresh watercress but the star of the show just might be the fantastic roasted sunchokes. A definite highlight of the new menu.
With prawn bisque foam, prawn floss and charred lettuce with pickled white onions and sweet caramelised onion puree.
This is an inventive dessert of tangy sour burnt butter curd hidden beneath cold creamy vegan coconut sorbet and burnt coconut husk meringue with Sichuan pepper mascherated cherries.
