If you’re craving sun, surf and sand this holiday, Perth offers some truly spectacular beaches. Locals have told us Scarborough is the ‘hood to head to for stunning azure water and some excellent dining options, too. Try the Rendevous Hotel Perth Scarborough; this hotel has gorgeous beach views, a lagoon-style pool, and is walking distance to Scarborough’s cafes and restaurants.
(Fun fact, Michael Jackson once stayed at this hotel, and the piano he played is still there!)
If wineries are more your speed, rent a car, head down to Margaret River and try out glamping at Olio Bello Lakeside Glamping. Foodies and wine buffs will be in heaven sampling local produce in Margaret River, plus many of the wineries have playgrounds attached! (We were big fans of the enormous sandpit at Eagle Bay Brewing Co.)

If you’re feeling indulgent, check out the Maldives. December is an excellent time to visit, with daily temperatures hovering around 27 degrees. Hotels here run the gamut from ‘pretty affordable’ to ‘Beyoncé probably holidays here’, but you should be able to find something to fit your budget. The Kandima Maldives is one of our top picks – we hear it’s particularly good for families.
If you’ve got money to burn (or just want to see how the other half holiday!), check out the Soneva Jani. This 3-bedroom over-water retreat comes with a private deck and swimming pool, not to mention its own water slide. Prices start at a cool $13k per night!

Okay so there’s a risk of some rain at this time of year, but we would never pass up the chance to visit this beautiful town when it isn’t baking hot (seriously, 40 degrees when we visited in June!). Hoi An is a delightful place to just wander around: there are plenty of secret laneways for kids to discover, loads of cool coffee shops, the most delicious (and cheap!) food, and of course in the evenings there’s the spectacular sight of thousands of lanterns. At the higher end of the spectrum check out the Almanity Hoi An Wellness Resort — ideal if you’re looking to fit in some massages and yoga on the holiday.
For a cheap and cheerful option, try the Venus Hotel and Spa: prices for a family room (with connecting rooms) are very reasonable, even before the discount! Located right on the edge of the old town, it’s just a short stroll into the main part of town.

Ok maybe this isn’t a ‘short getaway’ but if you’re after a Northern Hemisphere kind of Christmas – cold, snowy, roast dinners and Yorkshire puddings – then you might want to try one of the many London hotels on the Changi Recommends site. We like the look of Marlin Waterloo, just a short stroll from St James Park.
But if you want to go really traditional, head to the Cotswolds. Think crackling fires, full English breakfasts, and scones with jam and clotted cream (it’s little wonder that Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter drew her inspiration from the area). The Slaughters Country Inn is a classic country inn, full of charm and nestled in one of England’s most picturesque regions (and we can vouch for the Pimm’s — heaven!).

If a city getaway with a dose of culture and a spot of shopping is what you had in mind, head to bustling Bangkok. December is a great time to visit, as the city is slightly cooler, and the monsoon period is over. For something indulgent, try the The Salil Hotel Sukhumvit 57 – Thonglor. This place screams decadence, and is conveniently located close to EmQuartier, one of Bangkok’s largest shopping malls, along with all the cool restos and shopping in the chic expat ‘hood of Thonglor.
The Alix Bangkok Hotel is great if you want a bit more space; think 2-bedroom family suites with a kitchenette, and a dining and living area. You’re still close to the malls here, so you should be able to duck out and do some Christmas shopping during your stay – possibly even sans kids!
