Yes you CAN rock layers, even here in steamy Singapore! Our mama style experts tell you four ways to make it work
Are you a mama who still wants to look stylish even in the face of, well, being a mom? Do you want to know more about fab local designers and brands? We’ve teamed up with fashion bloggers (and Singapore mamas) Ms Yin/Ms Yang to bring you a monthly dose of fun and practical fashion tips that are equally perfect for fashionista mamas or mamas who are just happy to be out of their gym clothes or flip-flops. You can read more about the column here!
It’s hard not to get the feels when you are reading the September issue and you see all these gorgeous coats and boots creeping into the pages. I lived in New York and Hong Kong before Singapore and have a closet stocked with all these cold weather creations that have not seen the light of day in the two plus years that I’ve been Sing-side. But if you plan it out and play it right you can bring a few of these bad boys out of hiding and switch up your typical sundress styles. Let’s take a look.
PSSST! Don’t forget to enter our Instagram giveaway for a chance to win a personal styling session (and makeover, and two dresses) with the fabulous Sabrina Sikora (aka Ms. Yin) herself!
If you plan on hanging out in a shopping mall or going out to eat non-alfresco then you know the AC can be a killer. Skip the pashmina and go on and grab that leather moto, cargo coat, or bomber you always pass by. When outside just toss it over your shoulders, cape-style, to keep your cool. We also love little boleros and capelets by SG label Raahi for a night out, which add a layer of dazzle to the look while repping the local labels! Win-win!

Start with a look that will keep you already keep you cool like a lightweight slipdress or breezy maxi then add a basic blazer to tailor the look. Now you will look right at home, whether in the CBD or Demspey Hill. For this look I like to add a slight heel like the uber-comfy ones from Emblem Shoes. These are the perfect little pick-me-up that can withstand school pickups, a girls’ coffee sesh, or a date night!

And of course you know I’m going to tell you to wear a kimono! A kimono is my SG go-to for a myriad of reasons. You can wear shorter shorts and cover the backside with a longer kimono. They are perfect for manic mall air-cons.
Wearing a simple pant and cami? No problem! A kimono will elevate the whole look in a flash with very little effort required. Plus, so many local labels are getting on this trend including Maisha Concept, What the Frock?!, and Simone Irani.

If you want to give the pajama dressing a try then switch out the kimono for an actual robe for instant glam for a night out! I’ve work the Maizon Zhou black silk robe over an evening gown for dinner out as well as a feather print one over a jumpsuit to Glamorous Giving. Plus, when you come home you can just close the robe and turn the look into loungewear!
So now when you see the lovely layers in your daily Instagram feed you to can partake in the seasonal style revamp without passing out from heat exhaustion. But maybe do stay near a mall… just in case.
