Want a kindergarten that incorporates play into learning key academic concepts? Check out Canadian International School’s Kindergarten programme for learners aged 2 to 5 (Hurry, February Open Day slots are limited!)

Picking the right kindergarten for your child can be a difficult decision. After all, you want a solid curriculum that will help lay a successful foundation for your child’s future academic pathway but you also want your little one to have fun and play as they pick up life skills (and hey, a second language would be nice too, right?). Canadian International School’s (CIS) kindergarten education puts inquiry and purposeful play at the heart of learning where children have fun while absorbing key concepts in Maths, Chinese, Literacy, Phonics and more. Want to see how they achieve this? We’ll take you through a day in the life of a kindergarten student at CIS plus give you the chance to let your child experience the CIS away for themself (hurry though, slots are limited!).

Lessons are designed to be fun

CIS’ expert teachers are skilled at harnessing your child’s natural curiosity in order to teach concepts such as Maths and literacy through purposeful play. Through play, children can safely explore the world around them and develop their creativity. Play allows them to connect with the things that are familiar to them, giving them the freedom to experiment along the way. At CIS, students are constantly reading and asking questions, looking for meaning, understanding new concepts and building connections with those around them and with nature.

Key skills like foreign language mastery, literacy and numeracy aren’t forgotten either. Instead, these are built into each child’s daily routine without them realising it. You’ll notice it yourself when your child comes home to tell you about their outdoor water play, where the teachers gave them differently shaped items and encouraged them to fill each one with water. In this lesson, not only did they learn about concepts such as volume and capacity, but they also had a blast during the lesson!

CIS Indoor Activity

A day in the life of a CIS Kindergartner

What does a typical day look like for a CIS kindergartener, you ask? It begins during dropoff at 8:30am where students are greeted by their homeroom teachers. After a morning song and class catch-up, children begin the day’s activities. Each child is given a timetable like the one CIS student Charlotte has below.

On a typical day, students can learn more about Singapore and the different countries that their classmates come from in the “Where We Are in Place and Time” unit of enquiry – they’ll design maps and build a model of a Singapore landmark before having a snack. Afterwards, they’ll head to Chinese classes before moving outdoors, where the class will try an “outdoor community market” activity.

Following their teacher’s guidance, young learners will stage the community market using various textured materials such as seeds, sticks, rocks, shells, leaves, blades of grass and other materials. This trial-and-error exercise allows them to use their five senses, understand counting, sorting and grouping different materials and lets them engage their critical thinking process.

PE Class is next where children can improve their swimming skills just before lunch and more outdoor play. As part of the curriculum, CIS kindergarteners are also encouraged to choose new books and reading materials from the library and participate in after-school activities such as gymnastics.

Experience the CIS way for yourself

Keen to see the CIS’ kindergarten programme in action? Sign up for their Open House event where you’ll get to speak to their expert teachers and principals, while your child will get to try out a range of activities in four different zones: Arts, Maths, Literacy and STEAM.
