Check out these 10 unique fitness classes – everything from bungee to pole dancing – if your workout could use a shot of excitement
Why pound the treadmill or do plain old yoga when you can go high-tech with personalised wellness sessions, get your groove on with super-fun Rhythm Cycling classes, or soar with silk hammocks in Aerial Recharge?
We’ve rounded up the coolest, most unique fitness classes in Singapore that will make your workouts fly by (at least, that’s the hope!).
Established in 2014 as a world class personal training studio (fitness is not a one-size-fits-all proposition!), Level offers a range of functional fitness training and education options, along with wellness practices and rehabilitation services. The unique wellness studio – apart from being a place where clients can simply chill out and relax – incorporates meditation and sound healing (such as Tibetan singing bowls) in addition to traditional yoga classes. Furthermore, the yoga studio is Asia’s first studio to feature binaural technology; this means the room is structured so that the vibration of sound waves reflects off walls and allows individuals to enter a hyper-relaxed state of mind. Another unique class is Metcon 60, a carefully crafted, 60-minute strength class that provides a total body workout with a considered progression in technique and conditioning that spans 10 weeks. Three convenient locations at Telok Ayer, Ann Siang Road and Robinson Road further bolster its individualised approach that caters to your needs, mama!

Think about how much you sweat during a regular spinning class…wouldn’t it be so much more refreshing if done in the water? That’s the concept of Aquaspin™ – Spinning in the water – a fun and uniquely Singaporean offering with four locations in some of Singapore’s most beautiful hotels and country clubs! It just might be the only place where you can get in an outdoor workout without sweating! Not to mention it’s effective AND fun, with upbeat music, inspiring instructors, and beautiful tropical scenery. In 45 minutes you get a true full-body workout, mama: burning up to 800 calories, Aquaspin™ is high intensity but low impact (fab if you’ve got creaky joints or are recovering from surgery), and as a bonus the aqua massage is a proven cellulite killer (score!). Finally, it’s an excellent option for prenatal and post-natal mamas since there’s no risk of overheating and it reduces both varicose veins and water retention. Who’s ready to hop in the water with us?!

We’ve long been fans of high-intensity workouts, but BXS takes things to another level with four different high-energy workouts – rebounding, boxing, riding and hybrid training – in convenient, luxe surroundings that feel miles away from traditional exercise machines and bench presses. With super fun classes and cool instructors, BXS was envisioned as a place to “bridge the gap between fitness and partying” (sounds good to us!). In the words of the founders: “The partying vibe keeps people coming back while getting fit at the same time.” Within BXS’s three themed studios (Wonderland, Battleground and Dungeon), you can expect everything from pyrotechnics to curated soundtracks, mama. You can defy gravity in the Wonderland trampoline rebounding room, break your own limits in Battleground, and sweat it out as a pack in the Dungeon. We also like the pay-as-you-go model, which means you don’t have to deal with the hassle of costly long-term memberships (though buying a class bundle is a better deal).

Already a pioneer in Singapore’s Pilates and Xtend Barre classes, Upside Motion is also at the forefront of Aerial Yoga. Their newest offering – Aerial Recharge – provides the perfect opportunity to create balance with yin yoga postures while finding a bit of peaceful quiet time (something in short supply, amirite mamas?) while cocooned in silk hammocks. Did we mention it includes a 20-minute power nap?! Feel restored, refreshed and ready to take on the rest of your day once you’ve completed this 45-minute class, mama!

Sure, Singapore is just about the safest place on Earth, but there’s nothing wrong with feeling strong and empowered and knowing how to defend yourself, mama! Krav Maga is an Israeli self-defense combat system that draws on a variety of martial arts and techniques – including Muay Thai, Judo, and wrestling, among others – but aims to first and foremost teach students how to avoid, prevent, deter and deal with all types of violent confrontations. In addition to adult classes for all levels, KMG offers “krav junior” classes for kids that teaches important lessons in self-defense, respect, and conflict resolution.

Any Star Wars fans out there? Started in 2014, The Saber Authority’s mission is to “merge function with fantasy”. That is to say, they teach you saber dueling (with swords!), but it’s not about make-believe combat; instead skills are based on actual Asian Martial Arts, teaching students foundation strikes and footwork while building up to more advanced techniques that can culminate in the full thrill of lightsaber dueling.

There’s nothing quite like Capoeira: a Brazilian art of fight, game and dance. Yes it’s a martial art, but it’s also a form where practitioners can express themselves through movement and music, and can be absolutely beautiful to watch (if the person knows what they’re doing!). Blending dance, fight, acrobatics and rhythm into a game, Capoeira is a great all-body workout but is also a ton of fun for all ages. Senzala Singapore offers beginner and mixed level classes for adults, and their kids’ classes start for littlies as young as 18 months of age (so cute!).

Singapore’s premier lap and pole dance studio, SLAP delivers a series of tough workouts that build strength and flexibility in a really warm and supportive environment…with the bonus that you just can’t help but feel a bit sexier afterwards. Classes start with basic stretch and Pilates, then move on to “Striptease” with chairs and other props, and culminate in Pole Dancing with tricks ranging from easy up to hard (and that includes 6-inch heels, mama!).
