Tanglin Mall is a perennial favourite amongst mamas in Singapore. You can’t seem to avoid it, even if you want to (it can feel a little “Stepford”!) Centrally located within a stone’s throw of Orchard Road and sporting an abundance of tot-oriented shops, plus a couple of cafes for caffeine refueling, it’s the ideal spot to venture to if you have really tiny ones.
On the 3rd level of Tanglin Mall you’ll find one-stop baby and kids’ superstore, Motherswork, which stocks everything from strollers to sippy cups, baby essentials like muslin wraps and sleeping bags, a select range of baby furniture and an impressive range of children’s toys and books. Just be warned, it’s all on the pricey side mama. On the 2nd level (next to the taxi rank) you’ll find Motherswork’s store for mamas, stocking such a great range of maternity goodies we almost wish we were preggers again. Almost.
One of our favourite children’s toy stores in Singapore, The Better Toy Store is our go-to store for French brand, Djeco, and the environmentally friendly Plan Toys. You can get much of Djeco’s gorgeous puzzles, art and craft supplies and paper products here and a large selection of Plan Toy’s dollhouse and construction toys.
3. TANGO MANGO BOOKSHOP 03-11A Tanglin Mall
Tucked away on the 3rd level of Tanglin Mall, bookstore Tango Mango is a treasure trove of children’s books, art supplies and colouring and sticker books. It is also home to all your stationery needs, magazines for Mamas and birthday cards and wrapping paper. Staff are friendly yet unassuming when all you want is a good browse.
4. KIDZ STORY 01-09 Tanglin Mall
Tel (+65) 6734 0405
Stocking an impressive range of Playmobil and Razor products, Kidz Story is also the place to go for a range of party supplies for your little one’s birthday. They can even do helium balloons if you want to go the extra mile.
Health food store Brown Rice Paradise is your go-to destination for all things healthy. Stocking a full range of baby food (they stock Ella’s kitchen, amongst other organic brands), toddler snacks and organic infant milk powders, as well as natural, organic baby skincare products, eco-conscious parents can find most things needed for their super healthy babes.
6. ATTIC PALS
02-21 Tanglin Mall
Another toy store gem, if only for their range of Lego and Duplo, Attic Pals also does a good range of children’s colouring books and puzzles, baby’s Lamaze toys and all the children’s diningware you could ever need.
Maternity and Early Childhood Specialists, Mother and Child, offer a range of pre and post natal classes for expectant and new mothers. Our fave thing? The fact that they welcome breastfeeding Mamas to drop in and use their space to discreetly feed bubs. Fabulous!
Carlton cafe institution, Brunetti, is a home away from home for all those Melbournites out there craving a good cup of real Italian coffee with a torta on the side. Brunetti certainly satisfies our caffeine cravings. Open from 8am for early risers!
With a teeny store in Tanglin Mall, and a bigger outlet at Tan Boon Liat Building in Tiong Bahru, The Shophouse is full of great finds, including goodies from colourful Indian lifestyle brand, Good Earth. We love their colourful textiles, distressed TV cabinets and chic lamps.
Gymboree kind of works like a Fitness First, but for kids. You buy a membership together with a package of classes and then call ahead and book (or just show up) to the ones you like the sound of. They have a ton of different classes for 0-5 year olds and an awesome playroom that’s available for parties.
Sassy Mama Tip: There are a number of ride-on toys scattered throughout Tanglin Mall that are a bit of old school fun. Look for them on the basement level (hello Elmo!) in front of the DIY store and on Level 2 in the atrium area (hi Barney!) in front of the customer service desk.
When: Open daily from 9am (most shops open from 10am)
Originally from Australia, Sarah Fennell landed in Singapore via Hong Kong, where she spent 3 years eating Dim Sum and doing laps of the Peak Trail (in between having a baby and changing nappies). Since arriving in early 2011, Sarah set out to explore the Lion City in search of the perfect cappuccino (for her) and playground (for the toddler). All this exploring – combined with her moderate addiction for online media – lead to the Little Notebook blog, Sarah’s very own corner of the web, where she shares her ideas for enjoying family life in Singapore. In between blogging and child wrangling you’ll find Sarah writing for various online publications – like right here at Sassy Mama!
