Forget about rote memorisation and lectures, Saturday Kids coding and tech camps are all about learning through PLAY
Looking for a different kind of coding school, mama? With an emphasis on learning through play (and never through repetition and rote memorisation), Saturday Kids is the place for bold kiddos who like to try new things and take risks, even if that means the occasional failure now and then. It’s all perfectly in line with the principles of Growth Mindset, which we are basically obsessed with here at Sassy Mama!
At Saturday Kids, kiddos don’t just learn to code, they code to learn, because kids who learn how to learn become curious, inventive, resourceful human beings who solve real world problems and make a meaningful impact. They recognise that nothing is more empowering for a child faced with a problem than knowing, “I can figure this out myself!”
Here are 8 cool camps to inspire kiddos to explore the wonderful world of tech this summer:
Back to Basics: From Zeroes to Python Heroes
Kiddos can take a deep dive into the origins of hardware with software programming, learning about the different components of a computer by putting together their own laptop! They’ll also use a text-based programming language to code electronic components.
Recommended for ages 10 to 13
Curious Cubs: Explore the Wonders of Tech
This beginning class for littlies is geared toward getting them inspired by and engaged with tech through a series of four different immersive experiences: They’ll build on basic numeracy and literacy skills while learning computational thinking; make their own pixel art keychain; create electronic circuits with squishy dough; and even code their own fitness routine with Scratch Jr!
Recommended for ages 5 to 6
Kids will assemble their own computer and then code up their own music, animations and art, in the process of becoming a total Rockstar Code DJ! They’ll marvel at how they can turn a computer into an interactive musical instrument with code, while also creating visual effects to accompany those sweet tunes.
Recommended for ages 7 to 13
Robot Safari: Into the Wild World of Tech
ROAR! Combining craft, mechanical engineering and code, kids will actually build their own robot animals, all the while drawing inspiration from nature and the world around us.
Recommended for ages 7 to 13
Start with Scratch: Adventures in Time
Who wouldn’t want to travel back in time to explore ancient civilisations? Using Scratch Programming, kids will complete a series of exciting quests, putting themselves into the shoes of historic figures to get a sense of their everyday limitations. In the process of honing soft skills like empathy, they’ll use code to develop ideas in the form of a story, animation or even an app to help better people’s lives.
Recommended for ages 7 to 13
Paint in 3D with Tilt Brush by Google
This is a fab opportunity for kiddos to explore today’s amazing 3D technology. Exploring the world of virtual space, they’ll learn how to draw and create 3D masterpieces in the virtual world using cutting edge tech.
Recommended for ages 7 to 16
Code & Invent with Micro:bit Block Editor
Calling all tinkerers! In this cool course kids will learn to code with code blocks and invent actual gadgets using their own micro-computer!
Recommended for ages 7 to 13
Mobile Madness! Make your Magical App
Wow! Kiddos will learn to design and code their own mobile app and even see it live on their own phone! Kids can develop their own mobile game or animation app using the App Inventor 2 platform, an intuitive, visual programming environment that allows everyone – even kids – to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets.
