Seventh Generation uses plant-based ingredients, and their scents (such as lavender, citrus, and eucalyptus) are all made from REAL essential oils and botanicals, too! Products are made without synthetic fragrances or dyes, and are free of nasties like Triclosan and phosphates. In fact Seventh Generation is leading the campaign to #ComeClean, which is all about full ingredient disclosure on labels. They’ve got nothing to hide!
Seventh Generation has never done any animal testing, dating back to its founding in 1988, and in fact is listed in PETA’s database of companies that don’t test on animals and whose products are not based on animal ingredients.
As palm oil is a major concern in our part of the world, mamas will be happy to know that the company is also a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which is dedicated to promoting the sustainable production of palm oil worldwide and bringing only certified sustainable palm oil to the marketplace.
Seventh Generation is an industry leader in its use of post-consumer recycled plastic, as reducing waste and creating sustainable packaging is at the core of their mission to preserving the Earth for the next seven generations.
In fact, the company has a goal for 100% of its products and packaging to be made using biobased or post-consumer recycled content by 2020!
As women, we love that Seventh Generation is dedicated to period empowerment. Their 2006 “Tamponification campaign” was all about removing the stigma and secrecy surrounding periods, and they’re also a leading voice in ensuring that ALL women have access to high quality menstrual products.
It goes without saying that they offer a wide variety of safe and effective period care products, including organic cotton tampons and chlorine-free processed pads and pantiliners with no added fragrances or deodorants. Seventh Generation also donates 43 U.S. cents from every tampon, pad and pantiliner pack that it sells (up to 1 millions packs per year in the U.S.) to non-profit organizations that support providing products to women and girls in need.
Seventh Generation’s laundry detergent is 97% plant-based, totally free of dyes and synthetic fragrances and brighteners, and perfect for my baby’s sensitive skin. We particularly love the Free & Clear variety, as well as the Lavender Fabric Softener, which smells divine. Other products, like the dryer sheets and laundry powder, are biodegradable and packaged in recycled paperboard made with a minimum of 35% post-consumer recycled content.
I am extremely picky about baby wipes; I don’t want ones filled with nasty chemicals, but I also hate that a lot of wipes – especially eco-friendly bamboo varieties – are weak and prone to tearing. Of all the brands I’ve tried, Seventh Generation’s Free & Clear Wipes are my hands-down favorite: they are hypoallergenic, with 0% alcohol, fragrances, or parabens, and are also thick enough that a single wipe usually does the trick. Hopefully they’ll eventually become biodegradable, too!
Seventh Generation also offers a huge range of Free and Clear Baby Diapers with 0% chlorine bleaching (to prevent toxins from entering waterways) and a high-capacity core made with sustainably sourced, FSC Certified fluff pulp.
With Singapore’s weather demanding rigorous daily cleanings, and the fact that many small apartments don’t have the space for dishwashers, Seventh Generation’s full suite of cleaning products – including dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, and cleaners for wood, glass and bathroom surfaces – are a godsend. Just as I don’t want nasties on my baby’s skin, I don’t want them on my eating surfaces, either! Seventh Generation’s dishwashing liquid is a USDA Certified Biobased Product (95%) with no dyes or synthetic fragrances.
Yet another thing I love about Seventh Generation is that it’s widely available across Singapore. You can find the dishwashing and laundry products at supermarkets like FairPrice and Cold Storage. RedMart also carries some of the menstrual care and baby care products. Specialty shops like Brown Rice Paradise and SuperNature also carry Seventh Generation. I highly suggest checking it out if you’re on the hunt for safe, effective products that are doing their best to not harm the environment, mama!
