A hearty lunch and never too many cakes at The Fabulous Baker Boy

When was the last time you had a truly fabulous lunch, mama? Did it include cake? Good luck not giving in to dessert, even if it isn’t dinner time…

The Fabulous Baker Boy (TFBB) in lovely Fort Canning Park is one café you’ve got to put on your hit list, mama. The name may suggest a more sweet-toothed variety of eats, but we can vouch for the absolute deliciousness that is the main savoury menu here at the Sassy Mama team! A few weeks ago we held a baby shower at TFBB for Pregnancy Club Partnerships Manager Sarah, (she gave birth last week to a beautiful baby boy – we believe a congrats or two are due!), and stuffed ourselves silly with amazing food and cake.

Founded by Singaporean theatre actor-turned-fab-baker-boy Juwanda Hassim in August 2012, TFBB is all about yummy, no-frills comfort food and of course, cakes on cakes on cakes – we’re talking 27 flavours and counting! The café sits comfortably at the foot of Fort Canning Park along River Valley Road, with a parking lot all to itself and a pathway that leads right up to the beautiful park. It’s a little away from everything yet right in the heart of town, and well worth the trip for a peaceful lunchtime getaway or an afternoon treat. Decked out in Pinterest-worthy all-white interiors and wood accents, and beautifully lit by natural light coming from everywhere thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s a setting that’s perfect for food pics (avid Instagrammers, rejoice)!

Priding themselves in using only the best-sourced ingredients and food creations that make both the mouth and tummy happy, TFBB lets you dine guilt-free with a mix of healthy picks – like the Wild Mushroom Salad and Scottish Smoked Salmon Salad, each teeming with fresh veggies, or you can go all out with hearty food-coma-inducing delights like classic Duck Confit served with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, and the totally delish combo of Fried Chicken & Waffles. This fried chicken is off the hook, mamas!

Brunch is big here at TFBB, so you can expect other great choices like the Cajun Chicken Grilled Cheese and Tuna Melt, best accompanied by the café’s delicious coffee or fresh juice blends (try the slow-pressed juices or Juwanda’s secret-ingredient Iced Tea…he won’t reveal what’s in it but it’s so good, you’ll probably be ordering another glass once it’s finished!).

Other honourable main dish mentions are Ju’s Prawn Pasta (pappardelle ribbon pasta tossed in cream sauce and topped off with fresh, sizeable tiger prawns) and Almond-encrusted Salmon with Mango Hollandaise. Ahh…take us back there RIGHT NOW!

Did we also mention that they’ve just obtained their liquor license? If you’re feeling a little frisky mama, they serve a variety of alcoholic drinks, from cocktails to wines and even beers.

On to our favourite bit…the cakes! TFBB serves at least 16 varieties of cake a day (we once saw them post an apology on Facebook for serving ‘only 24 types instead of the full 27 flavours, wow), and we tried the Red Velvet, Nutty Monkey, Big Lub’s Carrot Cake, Salted Caramel and Strawberry Shortcake. Each and every one of them were stellar in their own rights, and each one packed a punch just as much as the next. (Though if we had to pick a favorite, the table was in agreement that the “Nutty Monkey” with peanut butter, chocolate, and banana was extra awesome.)We suggest getting a few slices of different flavours and sharing in a group; it’s the best way to get a taste of as many cakes as you can without committing to finishing just one slice!

While the surrounding area is decently quiet, TFBB is also great for big groups and parties (we did have a baby shower there after all!). They also have an ‘Eat for Free’ Birthday treat for birthday boys and girls who come in with three friends, so it’s a great birthday evening spent for a gal pal you’re not quite sure what to get as a gift!

All in all, TFBB is lovely for just about any occasion, whether you’re looking to have a quiet afternoon with lots of lush green scenery, a giggly brunch with girlfriends, a fun date night out with the hubs or even a nice lunch with the kiddos! You’ll be floored by all the food choices and cakes. Eat to your heart’s content and have a fab time, mamas!
