We round up our favourite mooncakes flavours for Mid-Autumn Festival 2017
If you love mooncakes as much as us, mama, you’ll want to take note of all the cool new releases this season. The Mid-Autumn Festival – a kid-friendly celebration of the phases of the moon and the enchanting goddess Chang Er, with fun lanterns thrown in for good measure! – will happen on Wednesday 4 October this year, so mark your calendars and start placing those orders!
If you’re new to Singapore or unfamiliar with mooncakes, they’re a sweet treat that come in two main varieties: the traditional baked version includes a salted egg yolk (representing the full moon) surrounded by lotus seed paste in a flaky pastry. Snowskin mooncakes are lighter (and slightly lower in calories and cholesterol), and come with a variety of fillings that can include chocolate, Champagne, nuts, and liqueurs. One of this year’s special editions even includes root beer filling!
Check out our gallery for our top picks for 2017!
Handmade with the finest artisan ingredients, Imperial Treasure’s traditional mooncakes feature silky smooth lotus seed paste specially imported from Hong Kong. Some special 2017 varieties include Mini Snow Skin Mao Shan Wang Durian Flesh and Teochew Yam Pastry filled with Velvety Taro Puree and a single golden egg yolk.

All of Fairmont’s yummy snowskin collections come in a unique and playful peach shape that’s echoed by the assortment box ($72 for 8 pieces). You can also nab yourself some classic baked selections (we’ve got our eye on Roasted Pine Nuts in White Lotus Paste — YUM!), with the option of an exquisite Premium Mooncake Box ($98 for four pieces) that’s a two-tiered, red leather-clad jewellery drawer chest inspired by Anti:dote’s afternoon tea set. It even comes with fragrant tea leaves encased in a contemporary bamboo container. Sounds like an amazing gift to us!

The artisanal mooncakes at this elegant Chinese restaurant and club lounge at Clarke Quay come in two seemingly traditional varieties, although both have a very definite twist: The VLV Lotus Paste doesn’t have any old egg in it – instead it’s Salted Egg Custard (yum!). And the White Lotus Paste Black Sesame Mooncake features subtly sweet black sesame lava, encased in a striking charcoal pastry dusted with gold flakes. How positively decadent!
