We’ve covered so much international cuisine, but where’s the Malay food?! We saved one of the best for last with this hidden treasure in Westgate Shopping Mall. Hajjah Mariam offers one of the best nasi ambeng platters in Singapore. Don’t know what that is? Once you find out you’ll never go back. According to Hajjah Mariam, “Nasi Ambeng is a fragrant rice dish consisting of white rice prepared with meat, vegetables, fried coconut flesh, Sambal Goreng as well as other dishes. It’s a popular Javanese-Malay cuisine that’s normally seen during festivities and served on a tray and enjoyed together in a tray that serves up to 6 people. It is only natural to eat Nasi Ambeng by hand and it is supposed to signify togetherness and peace at meal times.”
It’s exactly what it sounds like mama – two to six people huddled around a large tray of rice and traditional Malay dishes feasting away with their hands (it’s the best way to eat!). They also provide cutlery if you prefer.
